The WaPo has a piece where the administration is considering how it will react to the possible rise of Islamist governments across the region.
The administration is already taking steps to distinguish between various movements in the region that promote Islamic law in government. An internal assessment, ordered by the White House last month, identified large ideological differences between such movements as the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and al-Qaeda that will guide the U.S. approach to the region.
"We shouldn't be afraid of Islam in the politics of these countries," said a senior administration official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to describe internal policy deliberations. "It's the behavior of political parties and governments that we will judge them on, not their relationship with Islam."
Now my initial reaction to this is that moral equivalency and Obama's preference for dithering over action means that mostly we will do studies and papers and then sit on the sidelines and see what happens. The alternative of actually taking a moral stand for secular democracy is far too scary, they won't even do so in America when Black Panthers play thug life at a polling place. Nope we are just gonna wait and hope for a change that doesn't suck too much.
The thing about O's defensive crouch is that it diminishes our ability to impact events around the world. He has emasculated us and relegated us to spectators in the greatest revolutionary events of most of our lifetimes. No matter who ends up on top in any of the countries currently in play we can be sure of one thing, none of them will owe us a damn thing. Not friendship, or gratitude for our assistance and moral support or even the time of day. We weren't there when they were fighting and dying and they will remember that. Hell the Dutch are doing rescue ops in Libya and our Navy is where exactly? Oh they are en route, right, 'cuz this hasn't been going on for weeks now. Nobody could have foreseen the steady toppling of regime after regime eh? Nope the world's only policeman is too busy protesting for collective bargaining rights and fighting for the right to fight for rights well for union members at least. Those protesters need to organize and become a union, maybe then they can get heard.
Obama has shown he is no leader, so he dithers and waits for the dust to clear. Day by day the opportunity to engage with the minorities in these countries who would be sympathetic and open to a shot at secular democracy slips away. It never had to be rolling tanks into the Middle East, but you have to have the stones to take a position and support it. Can anyone tell me what O's strategy is?
