One of the most important things about any conflict is knowing your enemy. It obviously helps you in the fight, but sometimes it helps define at least a part of why you fight:
Suspected Taliban militants executed a seven-year-old boy in southern Afghanistan after accusing him of spying for the government, a provincial official said Wednesday. And this isn't unusual. My son writes me about two young teen boys who recently warned his unit of an impending ambush. Two days later they were found decapitated.
The child was captured by the militants in Sangin district of southern province of Helmand Tuesday, Daoud Ahmadi, a spokesman for the provincial governor, said.
"The militants killed the seven-year-old boy in Heratiyan village of the district, on charges of espionage for Afghan government," Ahmadi said, citing information provided to police by relatives.
This is the same enemy which, when in charge, executed women in the national soccer stadium in Kabul for the slightest offense. Who banned kite flying, music and education for women. They are what they are. All their attempts to change their public face to that of "freedom fighters" only attempts to mask the real murderous and intolerant core that is fundamental to their movement.
This is one of the reasons we fight. Any group who makes war on 7 year olds doesn't deserve to continue to exist.
