A few days back Brad Thor broke the story that Mullah Omar had been captured by the Pakistanis. Then the Jawa Report reported. My thoughts were as always, wait for Bill Roggio. Bill is still looking for confirmation he believes in, but Ollie North has piped up and confirmed what Brad reported.
According to Colonel North, Omar was picked up in Karachi on March 27th by the Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate (ISI) who placed him under house arrest in what they call “community care.”
Per North’s sources, “[Omar] has since been transferred to a secret ISI lock-up under the Pakistani euphemism: “institutional care.”
North goes on to state, “According to several reports, all of this information was confirmed to U.S. officials by a senior Pakistani military officer ‘several weeks ago.’” A fact also broken in Monday’s Big Government exclusive.
The big question is why. The Pakistanis could have done this pretty much whenever they wanted. They have an odd relationship with both the Pakistani and Afghan Taliban, but they almost certainly could have scarfed him up if they felt the need. So....why?
Karzai is working on a peace plan with a number of Taliban and there is good reason to believe that this action is part of a counter-balance to that by the Pakistani Intelligence forces. It is nearly impossible to know what the actual motivations for doing this are, and these guys give back-stabbing and playing both sides against the middle new meaning. They would make the Byzantines puzzled. Anyhow it is all well worth watching and good on Big Gov for the scoop.
