The Hill is reporting that the administration has backed off their (politically suicidal) proposal to bill private insurance companies for veterans seeking treatment at the VA for service-related health issues.

The White House on Wednesday backed off a controversial plan that would
have dramatically altered the way the Department of Veterans Affairs
(VA) handles insurance claims, after veterans groups staged an all-out
fight against such a proposal.|
President Obama will not pursue a proposal that would have allowed the VA to charge private insurance companies for the treatment of veterans with service- and war-related injuries. The proposal raised the ire of prominent Democrats on the House and Senate Veterans' Affairs panels. Final note, while some of you have thought that it was too early to get involved, you might think that this outcome bolsters your impressions.
It doesn't. It is much better to have a tempest in a teacup than have to REVERSE legislation or begin a campaign to sway Congress.
The administration backed down because of two things. First, the nation's largest veteran organizations denounced the change. You can thank them - they kicked ass on your behalf. And last, because us vets would make sure that any legislator that voted for the change would soon find themselves unemployed.
