It appears they have captured the fat, little bastard (to quote Shawn Bryan) who you have seen pictures of. As it turns out lumpy didn't have that full 72 goat commitment to martyrdom that his buddies did. The Indians have released a whole lot of info purported to be from him about the planning, training and execution of the attacks. The story tracks almost exactly with most of the conventional wisdom as soon as the attacks began.
The only terrorist captured alive after the Mumbai massacre has given police the first full account of the extraordinary events that led to it – revealing he was ordered to ‘kill until the last breath’.
Azam Amir Kasab, 21, from Pakistan, said the attacks were meticulously planned six months ago and were intended to kill 5,000
He revealed that the ten terrorists, who were highly trained in marine assault and crept into the city by boat, had planned to blow up the Taj Mahal Palace hotel after first executing British and American tourists and then taking hostages.
Police insist that Kasab confessed to being a member of the Pakistani terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba, which has denied involvement in the carnage, and claimed he and the others were trained in the Muslim country.
Intelligence analysts are keeping more of an open mind, however. And some political observers point out an unhelpful tendency by the Indian authorities continually to blame ‘Pakistan elements’ without solid evidence.
Some speculative reports emerging from New Delhi even suggested Pakistan’s intelligence services had a hand in training the terrorists.
The tale the Indians tell is the one most advantageous to those who mistrust Pakistan, so keep in mind this could be complete BS. .Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) was the first group that came to mind and they have a history of mass attacks and are reputed to have fought alongside the Taliban in the large assault on a US outpost of the 173rdn ABN in Wanat, Afghanistan earlier this year. Several hundred jihadis attacked a small temporary outpost and after killing scores of enemy and suffering some tough losses our guys pulled back. They later destroyed most of the remnants of the jihadis. I've met some of the guys who fought there and it was one hell of a battle.
Leaving aside my contention that an attack such as this was not all that complex, these guys appear to have spent between 6 months to a year on this abomination. Let's look at their goals according to the report.
Infiltrate and shoot a bunch of people
Take VIP hostages and make demands
Blow up the Taj Mahal hotel
On the first, these scumbags hit the jackpot. They may have wanted to kill 5,000, but they killed far too many and they may have learned just how effective slaughtering people in public places is in creating terror. Yes bombs are horrifying and effective, but sadly this will show them just how terrifying a nut with a gun and grenades is, standing there just mowing people down.
The second one didn't go so well although they got one high-ranking anti-terror guy and the head rabbi and most of his family. They managed no major VIP captures and there was none of the usual hostage drama where they get a chance to air their grievances. Overall this phase was a failure.
As far as blowing up the Taj, they failed pretty badly and had no where near the explosives necessary. In addition whatever training and planning went into this phase it shows no where near the sophistication needed to drop a building of that size.
So the two complex parts of their plan, the ones that would have taken planning, training and sophistication to pull off didn't work. The lowest common denominator phase where you launch fanatics hopped up on speed, armed with guns and grenades and have them shoot as many people as possible, that one went brilliantly.
The press and many in leadership positions around the world want to fetishize these bastards into ninja-like assassins. That makes them rare and basically impossible to stop. That innoculates governments from having to protect you from them. But look at these highly-trained, holy warriors, they planned and trained and then they launched. All the hard parts of the attacks failed and the one thing that worked was pure, naked brutality. They shot unarmed people and lobbed grenades in public places. The train up time for that alone is about two hours, the questions now are.
Do the bad guys figure that out and change tactics?
WTF are we going to do about that?
