Murtha Keeps Trying to Snatch Defeat from the Jaws of Victory

Congressman Jack Murtha is really making a name for himself these days.  While victory is certainly not assured, to Jack Murtha defeat is a foregone conclusion.

Byron York writes:

A year ago, I said we can't win this militarily, and I got all kinds of criticism." Now, Murtha told the strongly antiwar audience, "I worry about a slow withdrawal which makes it look like there's a victory when I think it should be a redeployment as quickly as possible and let the Iraqis handle the whole thing."

Rich Lowry:

In a howler, he maintains that if we leave, “al Qaeda’s going to disappear.”

The Washington Post even gets in on it.

Here's some gems from Jack Murtha:

“We're overextended worldwide, ... We have too small an Army for the job that we're doing, yet we can't increase the size of the Army because it's volunteer and we can't enlist anybody.”

“I have never seen such an outpouring in the 32 years I've been in Congress of support and people with tears in their eyes, people walking along clapping when I'm walking through the halls of Congress, saying something needed to be said.”

“I like guys who've never been there who criticize us who've been there.”

"It's different because there's no progress at all.”

“Our troops have become the enemy. We need to change direction in Iraq.”

“We cannot win this militarily. Our tactics themselves keep us from winning.”

“I didn't want (the public) to think this was a Democrat position plotted from the left wing,”

    "We're the enemy."

"Now, my plan says redeploy to the periphery, to Kuwait, to Okinawa, and if there's a terrorist activity that affects our allies or affects the United States' national security, we can then go back in."

Didn't even have to go to ABSCAM for any of the above...

Finally, quotes from the real opposition, captured by the esteemed Greyhawk:

One person who should be pleased indeed is Al-Qaeda's deputy leader Ayman al Zawahiri, who called on American Democrats to hurry up and pass this measure mere days ago:

"The people chose you [Democrats] due to your opposition to Bush's policy in Iraq, but it appears that you are marching with him to the same abyss, and it appears that you will take part with him in the defeat."

He had a word for our allies in Iraq and Afghanistan, too:He also said that “the people cooperating with the United States in Afghanistan and in Iraq would be abandoned by the Americans once they fail, the same way they did in Vietnam.”

You Marines have my profound sympathy that that SOB ever wore the uniform...
