July 2006

The Words of An Israeli Army Captain

Dave sends this speech given by Captain Uri Lavie, a company commander in the Golani Brigade briefing his soldiers (most of whom had about nine months of service) a few minutes before joining the battle against Hizballah terrorists in southern Lebanon on July 27, 2006:

This is our time to rise to the challenge, put on the helmets and the bullet proof vests and make sure that the northern border is secure.

We shall fulfill any mission in a most effective manner, in face of any challenge.

If we shall not fulfill our mission we shall forfeit the right to exist.

We shall not lose this war, which we did not start.

Our duty is to serve as a defense force of the Jewish People, and to secure the peace of mind of the civilians in northern Israel.

If we shall not do it, no one will do it in our place.

For two thousand years we waited for the establishment of the Jewish State, and we are not going to roll back because a bunch of terrorists assume that they can scare us.

He who cannot defend Liberty does not deserve Liberty.

If we will not be able to fight until our last drop of blood, in order to secure the Liberty of our People on its own soil, our People will not enjoy Liberty.

There is time to talk and there is time to act.  At this time, when missiles and Katyushas afflict the North all the way to Haifa, in addition to the two kidnapped soldiers, the ten soldiers killed and the dozens injured, it is time to fight and not to talk.  We are the force, which has been chosen to fight, and we shall perform in the most effective manner.

I will be the first one to enter the battle and the last one to come out, and will do everything in my power to get you out alive and well. On Friday, with God's help, we will rejoin with our families. However, I cannot do it alone. Once we cross the northern border, you should exercise full alert and full responsibility toward your fellow soldier.

Good luck and godspeed, Captain.

Stephen Colbert & Eleanor Holmes-Norton

This is why God Al Gore invented the internets. Colbert has run laps around quite a few Congress critters and it is surprising to see them still showing up. Eleanor Holmes-Norton brought the heat though and she and Colbert rocked. Most of the time he just leads a clown looking for some cheap pub down the garden path and edits rings around them, but this was money. He launched all kinds of baloney at her and she just returned it all and more. Go watch it courtesy of the Mighty Allah

Kofi Annan- Worst Public Official Ever

I once watched UN workers loot a warehouse full of relief supplies during our efforts to help people after a tropical cyclone that killed a quarter million people. They took all the valuable things, like batteries, and generators and sold them to a known black marketeer, who then resold them to the few live people in the area. This was almost four days into the effort and the first time a single UN functionary had made it to Bangladesh. Then they commandeered all the small planes and helicopters we had assembled to distribute the aid for use taking their clowns on aerial joyrides to assess the damage, something we had accomplished days before, prior to actually helping some people. Sadly this was not the only instance of UN malfeasance I saw. I hate the UN......period. I don't know if there has ever been an organization with loftier goals that has failed so badly that they are literally harmful wherever they go. I realize they have been responsible for immunizing quite a few children, but honestly when you look at the scope of their incompetence and the damage they have done in the name of good, they are a major net loss to the world.

UN and Hizbollah flags fly side by side in Lebanon

The most corrupt public official in recent history wanders around making the most outrageous and mindless statements and gets a pass from the vaunted watchdog media. Kofi Annan is a disgrace and his tenure at the UN has shown that it cannot possibly be looked at as a force for good. They support, legitimize and then provide cover for evil worldwide. Normally that would be a metaphor i.e. providing diplomatic cover, or covering up their own or a client state's atrocities. But in this case it carries the military meaning of being placed in front of bad guys in order to become a bullet sponge protecting them. This is exactly what the UN allowed their "peacekeepers" in Lebanon to become. Then once Hizbollah had invaded Israel and kidnapped several soldiers, Kofi left his troops there to provide cover for Hizbollah who co-located with them and attacked the Israeli population by launching missiles from right next to UN positions. It shouldn't have been news to anyone that UN and the terrorists were partners, they were perfectly blatant, and the UN had more or less assisted and covered up their role in a previous Hizbollah kidnapping and murder of Israelis. Even worse is that the Canadian soldier who died had complained about having Hizbollah camped out with them and noted Israel's necessary response. via Michelle Malkin

A Canadian U.N. observer, one of four killed at a UNIFIL position near the southern Lebanese town of Khiyam on Tuesday, sent an e-mail to his former commander, a Canadian retired major-general, Lewis MacKenzie, in which he wrote that Hezbollah fighters were "all over" the U.N. position, Mr. MacKenzie said. Hezbollah troops, not the United Nations, were Israel's target, the deceased observer wrote.

Yet somehow we still hear calls for the UN to come riding to the rescue, as if that has the potential to make things better. Well if you want to see a serious spike in rape and corruption, coupled with propping up of despots and enabling of oppression, then the UN is just the ticket. Past that they are a disgrace.

Wall Street Journal on MilBloggers

Mike Specter wrote a story for the WSJ on milblogs.  His focus is the most excellent and hilarious JP of Milblogging.com.  Several others interviewed are yours truly and Mike Yon.  And of course out of the hundreds and hundreds of milbloggers, the MSM has to interview the three or four anti-Bush ones.  *sigh*

While I spent a lot of time with Mike (and recommended a lot of military bloggers to talk to) and a lot of what I said did not make it into the piece, I'm glad he included my quote about Abu Ghraib and the NYT.

All in all, Mike did a very good job.

Defeat Cynthia McKinney

The guys at Winds of Change scored a major coup in getting Hank Johnson to guest post about his campaign for the Congressional seat currently held by the unhinged controversial Cynthia McKinney.

...My opponent's record speaks for itself. Her history of controversy is well-known. It suffices to say that she has brought a great deal of negative national attention to her district. The causes she ostensibly serves - justice, peace, and equality - are only discredited by her antics. For every conservative pundit and operative attacking progressives, she has become a ready caricature, useful for discrediting the liberal wing of the Democratic party. As a progressive trying to restore respect to the cause of progressivism, I have been deeply disheartened by all my opponent has done to make it less mainstream and less viable....

And Mr. Johnson is answering questions from Winds of Change readers.

Return of the prodigal hound

My wife's puppy Karma left the reservation last Friday and got scarfed up by animal control earning her a night in dog jail. There was much consternation until we got word of her incarceration and much rejoicing on her return. here she demonstrates her new found ability to tell the difference between keep away and fetch.

Her lineage:

Dad: Purebred White Shepherd (gargantuan size)

Mom: Husky/Greyhound mix

Jack (ass) Idema?

OK collective wisdom of the milblogosphere enlighten me. I was of the impression that Jack Idema had been vigorously drummed out for lying, posing, cheating and all-around douchebaggery, am I wrong?

I have seen Free Jack Idema links on some blogs and I noticed he has a radio show on the same network as Kit and Heidi the Euphoric ones.

So school Uncle J and lets figger out if he is a poorly-treated rogue or a world-class JackAss.

John "Dirty Tricks" Murtha

Via Michelle Malkin, John Murtha hired a Private Investigator to check out Diana Irey, his competition for his Congressional seat this fall.   He must be scared.  Maybe he should just cut and run...

I'll close with this post that sums up the feelings of many of my Marine friends - from Old War Dogs comes this poem about John Murtha by Russ Vaughn, Milblogosphere Poet Laureate:

Semper I
"Semper I" is an old Marine Corps term applied to those selfish careerists who place their own success ahead of their men and the wellbeing of the Corps.  Congressman John Murtha is a living example of that disgraceful term.

A bugle blows in Arlington,
Lilting notes fill still sad air,
An eagle’s tears a globe fall on,
Trail an anchor with despair,
For a man we’d wish had not to die,
Brave youth among the best,
A Marine, he lived for Semper Fi,
And with Semper Fi he’ll rest.

So sadly is the contrast,
Between those who talk and fight;
Fat Pols for whom their war’s past,
But now can’t see the light,
Accusing brave young fighting men,
Of crimes they can’t defend,
Disgraceful fat old congressmen,
Who’ve lost the will to win.

Yes there we see the difference,
Between those who fight to win,
And a congressman with no sense,
Who’s committed grievous sin;
He’s turned against his Corps,
And no one knows quite why,
Except he loves himself much more:
Classic case of Semper I.

Semper Fi to all Marines everywhere from an old paratrooper who holds Murtha in as much contempt as you do.
