Serenity - Part II - Premiere

"If anyone tries to kill you, you try to kill them right back." - Captain Mal Reynolds, Firefly Episode "Our Mrs. Reynolds"

Ser_marcusbnr001Probably (and arguably) one of the few perks of this blogging gig is getting to preview books from my favorite authors, cool movies and events like the Best Ranger Competition.  One of the movies that I've been dying to see in Serenity.  I'll be at the Chicago Premiere of Serenity on Monday.  As I've turned Mrs. Blackfive into a SciFi (and Firefly) afficionado, she'll be there too.

Serenity is the movie from the TV series Firefly - one of the series that should never have been cancelled.

Here's the official synopsys from Universal Pictures:

Joss Whedon, the Oscar® - and Emmy - nominated writer/director responsible for the worldwide television phenomena of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE, ANGEL and FIREFLY, now applies his trademark compassion and wit to a small band of galactic outcasts 500 years in the future in his feature film directorial debut, Serenity. The film centers around Captain Malcolm Reynolds, a hardened veteran (on the losing side) of a galactic civil war, who now ekes out a living pulling off small crimes and transport-for-hire aboard his ship, Serenity. He leads a small, eclectic crew who are the closest thing he has left to family –squabbling, insubordinate and undyingly loyal.

So, will Mal and Inara finally admit their love for one another? Will Kaylee and the doctor hook up?  Will River kick Alliance ass? Will Zoe and Wash finally get that long vacation?  Will Jayne get command of Serenity?  And who is Book, really?

I might let you know on Tuesday...

I'll sign off this post with the ballad from the Firefly episode "Jaynestown" - the episode where townspeople think Jayne Cobb is Robin Hood when, in fact, he had to dump his stolen loot out of his ship in order to gain speed to avoid capture.  One of the more interesting aspects of Firefly was the use of music.  The lyrics are in the extended section:

The Ballad of Jayne

Jayne, the man they call Jayne

He robbed from the rich
And he gave to the poor
Stood up to the man
And gave him what for
Our love for him now
Ain't hard to explain
The hero of Canton
The man they call Jayne

Our Jayne saw the mudders' backs breakin'
He saw the mudders' lament
And he saw the magistrate takin'
Every dollar and leavin' five cents
So he said "you can't do that to my people"
He said "you can't crush them under your heel"
So Jayne strapped on his hat
And in 5 seconds flat
Stole everythin' Boss Higgins had to steal

He robbed from the rich
And he gave to the poor
Stood up to the man
And gave him what for
Our love for him now
Ain't hard to explain
The hero of Canton
The man they call Jayne

Now here is what separates heroes
From common folk like you and I
The man they call Jayne
He turned 'round his plane
And let that money hit sky
He dropped it onto our houses
He dropped it into our yards
The man they called Jayne
He stole away our pain
And headed out for the stars

He robbed from the rich
And he gave to the poor
Stood up to the man
And gave him what for
Our love for him now
Ain't hard to explain
The hero of Canton
The man they call Jayne.
