London is burning and the search is on for a way to avoid the bleedingly obvious, the welfare state has created a class off looters and moochers. Atlas Shrugged is actually some of the best political satire since Gulliver's Travels. Rand didn't know she was doing satire, but she created a perfect caricature of the modern welfare state. And now London and Athens and everywhere else the non-productive class feels slighted, are reaping the rewards of redistributing the wealth to those who lay claim to entitlements that must be provided by government.
Liberal social policies have brought western civilization to the breaking point. They had the best of intentions, just ask them. But they, and sadly we, are getting a heaping dose of the law of unintended consequences. If you train an entire cohort of society to believe that the government doesn't just offer a safety net but a way of life, well you get this- gangs of scum who will take what they want if the free lunch stops showing up. The chattering class is doing their level best to paint this as a legitimate reaction to dire economic times, and for once I agree with them. This is what happens when you run out of other people's money.
The debt debate debacle we just endured in this country kept a term in the forefront that should disgust any decent human being- Entitlements. Welfare, Medicaid and the entire gamut of wealth redistribution programs are called Entitlements. That is a grotesque mockery of the principles that this country was founded on and made it great.
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness."
Life and Liberty so each can live free and according to their own beliefs. The pursuit of happiness so each can chase their own dreams. Those were the promises, not their delivery in the form of a government handout. And yet those brilliant concepts, the greatest ideas ever used to form a civil society have been perverted and twisted beyond any recognition. Now we have half our society who don't even pay any taxes and huge swaths of the populace who rely on the fruits of others labor for their very existence. No one is entitled to this, no one should expect it and yet they do. It is almost anathema to even suggest that any of these Entitlements could be cut. We can go over the falls of fiscal sanity, but those checks from Uncle Sugar will still be going out.
So the entitled class is revolting and taking what they want and deserve. They have been taught by liberals that the rich have unfairly accumulated more than they need or deserve so it is only fair that they even the score. President Obama notes during every speech that the rich must pay their fair share. Is he unaware that the top 20% pay 70% of all tax revenues? Of course not, but as a true progressive he believes that they have no right to their money.
We’re not, we’re not trying to push financial reform because we begrudge success that’s fairly earned. I mean, I do think at a certain point you’ve made enough money.
He even said outright during the 2008 campaign that we need to "spread the wealth around". This wasn't an anomaly, this is progressive, liberal ideology and this is what has brought is to the crisis we now face. Leviathan consumes the output of the shrinking productive class and spreads it around to the looters and moochers. This creates a client constituency that will then vote for more, and more, and more. The continued growth of government during a financial meltdown ought to be instructive. We didn't cut the spending and wealth-spreading; we barely even dented its growth rate. Yet the call is out for the rich to pay more, even though the math says you could tax all the millionaires and billionaires for every dime they make and still not even balance the US budget.
Class warfare is the tool the Democrats here, and the left/liberal/socialists of Europe use to keep their hungry mouths angry and clamoring for more. They rail against the evil, corporate jet-owning, fat cats who exploit the poor and use $100 dollar or Euro bills to light their cigars. But where will the wealth our moral betters want to redistribute come from if not from the productive class? Are the tools who lay around on the dole going to create it? Are the baby's mommas going to start companies and employ their loser men? Are the crack and meth heads and drunks going to band together in a coop of addictive productivity? NO, they are not!
That leaves the rest of us, and I gotta be honest, I have near zero enthusiasm for supporting the lazy, no desire to pay for government unionists to retire at 55, and not one iota of interest in seeing my wealth spread around by incompetent, unaccomplished, know-it-alls like our current "leaders". They built the welfare state and created this monster, let them figure out how to feed it.If not then we must kill it. In the meantime, I am going to stock up on ammo to protect me and mine, and marshmallows for the fire. Burn baby, burn!
