Negotiate w/ who in Gaza?
The main argument against Israel from the left seems to be that Hamas is so recalcitrantly evil that no amount of fighting will change it, so Israel should just accept that and meet their demands. This is sadly true as Charles Krauthammer points out with his usual precision aim.
The grievance? It cannot be occupation, military control or settlers. They were all removed in September 2005. There's only one grievance and Hamas is open about it. Israel's very existence.
Nor does Hamas conceal its strategy. Provoke conflict. Wait for the inevitable civilian casualties. Bring down the world's opprobrium on Israel. Force it into an untenable cease-fire -- exactly as happened in Lebanon. Then, as in Lebanon, rearm, rebuild and mobilize for the next round. Perpetual war. Since its raison d'etre is the eradication of Israel, there are only two possible outcomes: the defeat of Hamas or the extinction of Israel.
Those advancing an argument of negotiation fail to recognize that the demands of Hamas stretch "from the river to the sea, Palestine must be free". That erases Israel from the map and hardly makes sense from their point of view. It seems that our enlightened elites around the world believe that Israel must simply accept the existence of a state on it's borders, bent on it' s destruction, and that all the terrorist acts of this state are simply the price for their own homeland.
It is hard to get my little mind around such an idea, but it's validity is hardly open to debate. None of those hollering for a cease fire and more fruitless negotiations can honestly believe that Hamas will come to the table and lay down it's claim to all the lands in question, or their avowed goal of running all the zionists from these lands. It is in their very charter and they look at any agreements they sign as simply steps toward this goal. They feel no obligation to abide by them and flagrantly violate them. Any cease fire or truce is simply a hudna to re-arm and re-fit.
Israel is truly in the land of Catch-22. If they fail to respond to the terror aimed at their innocent civilians they have forfeited their status as a sovereign nation. If they respond by attacking the swine who sow destruction they are vilified for any damage to civilians and even for killing the bastards who attack them. I am truly grateful that Israel is a nuclear power, for that is their only real trump card. Our support will come under attack as many of our new President's supporters have a deep and abiding dislike for them and have convinced themselves that the Palestinians are victims who would begin singing kumbaya, if the Israelis would just stop bombing pre-schools for a couple of days.
Israel has made so many concessions it boggles and each time the response was for the Palestinians to use them to continue their terrorist ways. Every trade of "land for peace" has netted suicide bombers, rockets, mortars and kidnappings. The hatred of the Juice is implanted in them from birth at every step of their indoctrination into the death cult that is their culture. It is so far gone that the head of Fatah is actually considered a moderate.
I see no solution to this problem anywhere on the horizon and as long as the schools teach the blood libel and hatred in cartoon form, maybe never. The Israelis can hardly be blamed, when faced with an enemy that denies their right to exist, if they hearken to that Derbyshirean construct "Rubble doesn't make trouble".
