Ask an Artilleryman- Raining fire on Gaza?
OK we have a new twist. I am soliciting expert advice from arty, fly boy or other munitions proficient readers about this picture. I have seen several different versions and I don't know what it is. The captions all read "Israel rains fire on Gaza" and it sure looks like that. But it doesn't resemble any shell I am familiar with and looks more like a flare fired from an aircraft to spoof ground to air missiles. So Artillerymen what say ye?
I found a picture that seems to show this is an airburst white phosphorous shell. This will undoubtedly lead to the same cries from the left that Israel is burning civilians alive. It should be remembered that we use this as well and it's purpose is to screen movement and not as an anti-personnel round. If they wanted to kill or maim civilians high explosive rounds are exponentially more effective.
