Someone You Should Meet: Lt. Kim

Posted By Laughing_Wolf

Given my monicker, and the time spent with real wolves, quite a few people found it appropriate and funny that part of my time at COP Ellis was spent with a different Wolfpack. The Alpha of this pack was Lt. Kim, who proved to be a smart and good leader, with a good sense of humor and even understatement. For example, while it was clearly implied, he was good enough to not to actually use the word "again" when cautioning me not to wander too far away during an operation to erect a new security checkpoint for Iraqi Concerned Citizens (called Sons of Iraq and other names elsewhere). Being a cautious soul, I really hadn't wandered that far to get some photos. Honest.

He is a straight shooter who, if he stays in the Army, should have a good career ahead of him. He was one of several up-and-coming leaders who impressed me during that first embed, and I very much enjoyed my time with him and with the Wolfpack.

In the movie, note the photo in the field. The taller "gentleman" did not impress me at all, and seemed not to care about either the locals overhearing him or to recognize that I was an embed given the rather derogatory comments made about people. Said "gentleman" showed up and had a bit of a hissy fit over the checkpoint as he had not been informed, and then proceeded to derail a plan that had been agreed to by his unit and those above him, forcing the checkpoint to be moved from the agreed position to a new one. Lt. Kim handled the attempted physical intimidation (looming, leaning over, etc.) by the taller "gentleman" and the verbal intimidation with aplomb, and the need to move and begin set-up over again in a new location with consummate professionalism.

It is a shorter interview as I didn't quite have the format down yet for these, but it is one I hope you enjoy.

One good thing about getting this up (finally) is that I thought I had posted some other movies and hadn't. So, here is a short bit about setting up the checkpoint that I also hope you enjoy.
