Obama Withdrawal
The withdrawal of US troops from Iraq should be neither a Republican nor a Democrat issue. Plain and simple, it is an issue of victory or defeat. In the process of succeeding in Iraq, a Presidential candidate and the PM of Iraqi want us out of the country. I think their motivation for our withdrawal is something very serious to consider.
Major Eric Egland has an op-ed at NRO about Afghanistan and Iraq:
...Senator Obama claims better wartime judgment because he, as a state legislator on the South Side of Chicago, opposed the Iraq War from the start — as did the overwhelming percentage of his constituents (hardly a profile in courage). In January 2007, Senator Obama said the surge would worsen security in Iraq, and unveiled a plan to withdraw all forces by March 2008. Had we followed Obama’s wartime plan, Iraq would be in chaos and the U.S. would be tearing itself apart arguing over how we could have lost a war without losing a decisive battle — Vietnam all over again. Worse, Al Qaeda would have achieved two strategic goals: defeating the U.S., and establishing a new base of operations from which to plan, finance, and train for a new wave of 9/11-style terror attacks...
There is much talk on the airwaves this morning about how Iraqi PM Maliki is somewhat in agreement with Senator Obama's plans for the withdrawal of US troops in 16 months. While I certainly hope that, by now, you all understand that we haven't quite warmed up to the Cult-of-Obama view of Iraq, we're also not very confident in PM Maliki's ability to figure out the withdrawal date either. Greyhawk, as always, puts it very succinctly (and let's you figure it out for yourself):
Iraq's prime minister said on Thursday he could get violence under control in six months...
"We agree our forces need work but think that if, as we are asking, the rebuilding of our forces was in our own hands, then it would take not 12-18 months but six might be enough."
AMMAN, Nov 30 (Reuters) - Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said on Thursday his government's forces would be able to take over security command from U.S. troops by June 2007 -- a move which could allow the United States to start withdrawing.
A nation's leaders should be optimistic, says I.
[The Greyhawks are on fire this week. Be sure to keep checking in at the Mudville Gazette.]
Perhaps Maliki is pandering to the front runner of the next election. Perhaps he wants us out for other reasons. We also know that Mutaqa al Sadr (Mookie) agrees with Obama.
...Followers of radical Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr embrace Obama's proposal for a withdrawal timetable, something they have pushed for all along, said Sadrist spokesman Salah al-Obaidi...
And we know that al Qaeda supports withdrawal. The shortest position tenure in Iraq is that of the leader of al Qaeda in Iraq.
Iran wants us out of there, too.
The bottom-line is that when you set a date for our withdrawal, you will be setting a date for a free Iraq's demise.
