Don't Ask, Don't Tell the Private universities
I hate it when I step out for a grande burrito and see a totally moronic headline. There's a lot of nonsense flying around about the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy and its potential change. "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" is the reason (discrimination against gays and lesbians) given when private universities ban military recruiting on campus.
First, the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" Policy was put into effect by President Ronald Reagan, George HW Bush, George W Bush, Bill Clinton.
FYI, he was a Democrat.
Second, Congress and it's Armed Services Committee are responsible for that policy. The Democrats have had since 2006 (at least) to change the policy and they could easily get a substantial majority to over rule a veto.
Now, all of a sudden, it's an Obama issue? What?
Private universities should ban Congress from teaching (receiving honorary degrees or making speeches) until they change the law, instead of banning military recruiters from campus. That's where the responsibility lies and that's where I get pi$$ed off at Mensa-candidates thinking that the military came up with the policy.
Congress discriminates.
I would also like to see federal funding pulled from any university that does not allow ROTC or recruiting on campus. If Congress changes "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", will private universities change their anti-military policies?
We, the authors, have varying (and valid) opinions for and against "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" here at Blackfive. I am against the policy, but I'd like to see more than a UCSB study completed to look into the ramifications of the change.
