Diplomacy the reason to bomb Iran
Not the stalled waste of time, formalized lying in formal wear currently failing to stop the Mullahs, but some post-strike, reconstruction packaged together with a ton of economic aid that all the western countries could put together after the Israelis jerk a decent knot in the tail of the Iranian nuke program. One of the points against an Israeli strike is that they could not hit all the targets and maybe couldn't even with US help. This piece at The New Republic argues that destruction of the program would not be the goal, rather it would stir the pot and force action out of the diplomats who currently do next to nothing. If the Israelis strike they could create a situation that requires forceful action and in an ideal situation this could lead to a popular uprising of the people against the bomb-desiring and economy-ruining Mullahs.
As one former Israeli defense official admits, bombing Iran merely to get the world's attention carries serious risks. It will probably result in Iranian retaliation, and a costly one for that matter. Meanwhile, the former official predicts, many world leaders will be furious and will "look for ways to punish Israel for its deeds."
But, as far as Israel is concerned, it is running out of time--and options--to stop Iran from getting the bomb. And letting Iran acquire nuclear capability would, at this point, be a double disaster for Israel. Not only would Iran have a new and terrible weapon, but Israel's pledges to stop the country from going nuclear would have been proven hollow. This could embolden the Iranians even more. Thus, the more Israel pledges to stop Iran, the more it becomes necessary to deliver. And, if the rest of the world won't do its part, then "stirring the pot"--however imperfect a strategy--may increasingly strike Israeli leaders as their least bad move.

I have argued before that a strike on Iran could create the space needed for an internal overthrow of the government, it could also create a full-on Middle East war. The Israelis do not have the luxury of waiting to see if the Mullahs will use a bomb once they have it. They seem to understand that far too many others are willing to do just that and are definitely not going to do what it takes to stop them......so.
Bomb, bomb, bomb..bomb, bomb Iran. Anybody got an alternate plan? Bueller?
