What Scouts are For

To be a Soldier or Marine, Sailor or Airman is to repay the debt you owe your ancestors:  to be a useful defender of the civilization that bore you and made you prosperous and strong.  The military is not the only organization that offers that chance.

For many, the beginning of service was with the Boy Scouts:

Boy Scouts who came to each others' aid after a tornado that killed four of their comrades and injured 48 people were hailed as heroes Thursday for helping to administer first aid and search for victims buried in their flattened campsite....

Ethan said the scouts' first-aid training immediately compelled them to act.

"We knew that we need to place tourniquets on wounds that were bleeding too much. We knew we need to apply pressure and gauze. We had first-aid kits, we had everything," he said.

Ethan said one staff member took off his shirt and put it on someone who was bleeding to apply pressure and gauze. Other scouts started digging people out of the rubble, he said.

The injured were taken to Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Alegent Health Clinic in Missouri Valley and Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha.

Our condolences to the families of the fallen, but our highest praise to those who did what they were trained to do.  Though but boys, they have acted with great honor.  Praise, too, for the men who taught them.

If only all American boys took such interest in the traditions of their ancestors!  If only all American men took such an interest in the boys who follow us!  Liberty is secured best by free men, brave and well-trained, who know how to defend the weak and help the stricken.  Disaster may strike anywhere at any time.  Not only nature but evil can strike at any time.

America needs, and deserves, such a defense in depth.  Here is one way you can help.
