Guantanamo- W's greatest failure
And I don't mean capturing terrorists and taking them to Cuba, I mean failing to act and allowing the prisoners to prevail in courts they should never have access to.
I don't have a political affiliation, but I vote on national security first and everything else second. I voted against Al Gore not for W and the same with F John Kerry. My vote for W the second time was almost completely based on one single factor. I knew he would not cut and run from Iraq and I knew Kerry would. I believe George W. Bush is a good, honest, decent man who constantly strives to do the best and harbors not a single one of the evil intentions the left ascribes to him. I also believe he done the job of President, decently , but there have been gaping holes. The best example is his personnel decisions. He has put woefully under-qualified people in positions of great importance and has not held anyone who failed accountable. Think back to him hanging the Presidential Medal of Freedom around the neck of George Tenet and the fact that he didn't fire a single person over the catastrophic failure of our entire intelligence apparatus on 9/11. There are many others that have given his political enemies far too much ammo. I will credit him greatly with two things, the economy and Roberts/Alito.
Which brings me to the reason for this, Guantanamo Bay. Yesterday the country became much less safe and it is almost entirely the fault of the Bush administration. Due to it's failure to charge, try and convict the prisoners housed at Gitmo, they now have access to the, exceptionally kind to bad guys, American judicial system. Bravo, Well Done! Now the most evil scum on earth, who we were lucky and diligent enough to capture, are going to have million dollar Soros-funded lawyers and we will be lucky if we don't end up paying millions of dollars to the poor, innocent goat herders we kidnapped and tortured for 6 years. What a sad, sorry state of affairs.
If the Bush administration had charged, tried and convicted these men under any sort of military tribunal, then some legal precedent would have been set. Our legal system likes precedents and is basically designed to respect them. Since W dawdled the terrorists took the initiative and they now drive the boat. That is quite obviously unacceptable and will allow a number of those we currently hold to avoid punishment and even custody. Since even the kind souls we have let loose so far have shown a great propensity to return to infidel-slaying, won't it be great when this takes it's logical course and we can't convict these scum under US rules of evidence and procedure. It has the additional advantage of making it very difficult to interrogate and hold anyone we may scarf up in the future.
President Bush has delivered for me on the reason I voted for him, he did not cut and run. We will eventually be able to claim Iraq as a victory and an ally, but it hardly stands as an example of good leadership. He has stated that his legacy will stand on the basis of his prosecution of the War on Terror, well now the terrorists have the ghost of Johnnie Cochran as their lawyer and the cases will be heard in Berkeley, and San Francisco, and unless we have videotape of them lopping off a head they will likely walk. Once again Bravo and Well Done.
