Afghanistan: Run on virgins finds heaven stocking up...

This story comes from a place called Ziruk.  We did a little operation there awhile back and chased some of the Taliban off.

The Ziruk district will continue to be a pain in the patooty for NATO and Coalition forces, because it currently has one road in and the same road out.  Going by helo would allow us to sneak up on them, but we could never get that kind of support lined up.

On this particular op, we did take a DshK Machine gun and a 73 mm recoil-less rifle out of a cave, and then later arrested the guy who owned the cave (he thought we wouldn't know) and turned him over to the MI cell, who I believe promptly moved him to Bagram and on to Gitmo.  Turned out we snatched up the #11 most wanted guy in the province.

Not bad for an open ended, one week long mission that we had 1 hour and 30 minutes to pack, load out, ammo up and leave for.

So it was with a smile that I read this today as I was cruising around the Internet...

Militants ambushed troops patrolling in the mountains of eastern Afghanistan, prompting a gun battle and air strikes that left about 55 militants dead, the U.S.-led coalition said Monday.

The coalition said militants ambushed the patrol on a road in Ziruk district with rockets and gunfire, prompting U.S.-led troops to return fire and call in warplanes.

About 55 insurgents were killed, including three key leaders, a coalition statement said. It did not identify them. Twenty-five militants were wounded and another three detained, it added.

"Patrols in the ambush area continue to report additional enemy casualties," it said.

The clash was the second in three days to inflict heavy casualties on insurgents, who have little answer to Western air power.

I guess some of that stuff we taught the Afghans how to do really took.  I could find no mention of any casualties for the friendlies.  The virgin merchants are going to have to stock up because there has been quite a run on them lately in the Ziruk district.

And that photo?  That is me on the left wearing the boonie, with my Weapons Company guys and my boss, Captain Jack on the right.  We are standing in front of the gate of the compound that houses the Ziruk District center and the police station.

Makes me happy to know we kept a good thing going.....
