An End to the Suspense

Only the other day, Cassandra wrote:

And that is what saddens and disheartens me so about the thing I mentioned at the beginning of this post; the thing I see everywhere I look these days. There is a name for it. It used to be partially hidden, this thing. It is not hidden anymore.  That thing is contempt.

[A]s I noted the other day, this contempt for military service and everything it stands for has been coming out of the woodwork for some time now. I Googled the phrase "Veterans memorials vandalized" the other day and got quite a few entries. I stopped after just the first few. It was discouraging.

With the contest for the Presidency being joined, the mask has been thrown away.

Republican presidential candidate John McCain’s family background as the son and grandson of admirals has given him a worldview shaped by the military, “and he has a hard time thinking beyond that,” Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Ia., said Friday.

“I think he’s trapped in that,” Harkin said in a conference call with Iowa reporters. “Everything is looked at from his life experiences, from always having been in the military, and I think that can be pretty dangerous.”

Harkin said that “it’s one thing to have been drafted and served, but another thing when you come from generations of military people and that’s just how you’re steeped, how you’ve learned, how you’ve grown up."

It is interesting how he views the families that have sent generations of their sons -- and, now, daughters -- to fight for America as particularly dishonorable and dangerous.  It is one thing if you were drafted, and had no choice, but to choose to fight for America... and generation after generation...

From the first days, we at BlackFive have called that America's Warrior Caste.

Tom Harkin voted to send our volunteers to Iraq.  Some of those have spent as much as two and a half years of their lives in the desert in obedience to his orders.

He won't have to hear from them, because their oaths bind them not to reply to an attack from a Senator.

But if you have something to say, why not say it?

Custom and tradition suggest that he be addressed as, "The Honorable Tom Harkin."
