What Did You Do For The Troops Saturday?

Well, I spent the day out at a friend's home helping bake (and putting/hiding a funny here that most seemed to miss). The son of some friends of my friend is on his second deployment to Iraq, and she wanted to try to top her previous 30 or so pound box of treats she sent last time. So, between us we alternated mixing and baking two different types of brownies, three different types of mini-cupcakes, almond shortbread, two different types of chocolate chip cookies, two different types of oatmeal cookies, homemade granola bars, and homemade protein bars. Net take was that when all was done, she mailed a 37-pound box of treats for him (and his buddies). In August, we are planning to do this again.

I spent the day boxing 200+ pieces of jewelry that will be divided and sent to Walter Reed and Brooke Army Medical Center so the wounded troops will have a gift to give for Mother's Day.

Well done LW.
I'm sure many around the nation spent some time over the weekend packing a myriad of goodies and other things for the troops. I hope those who DIDN'T will be inspired by you and your friend to get off of their duffs and get involved.

I drank beer and watched the NFL draft, does that count?
Cordially,

JewelryLady: Outstanding! Thank you so much for what you do.
Tankebabelc: Thanks, and it was fun, and yeah, hope it does. That's the idea, show that it doesn't have to be as much, just has to be.
This was my friend's idea, I just helped keep it below 12 hours of work...
Jimblow: Ahhh, Nah. :)

Here's a weird, but helpful idea when sending baked goods:
You'll need a paper envelope, which you'll seal with tape, and add 1/2-1 tsp. iron filings. Tape it up so the iron doesn't find its way Don't ask me where to get them, be creative.
Put one envelope in each bag of baked goods. The iron will absorb any 02 left in the bag, (over time) which will cause the baked goods to stay fresher, longer. It's the same way they keep MRE poundcake so yummy and moist.

Looks like we have a taker for the Angel Baking Team over at Soldiers' Angels!
I just seal my cookies in wax paper, followed by aluminum foil, followed by zip lock baggies, and it seems to do the trick. No iron filings needed but a kitchen aid mixer works wonders :)

Filled a Uhaul trailer with donated furnishings and a bed we purchased for a recovering wounded vet who had nothing for his apartment. Thanks to everyone for doing whatever you can.

WOW! That's impressive. I feel like a slacker now...
Gingersnap cookies travel well too & New Orleans style pralines are always a big hit. (I can send you the recipe if you want.
Jewelry lady: Bless You. I remember the first deployment, Friends of the San Onofre Marines went to the local elementary school and asked the kids to vote on a gift for the Moms for Mother's day. My daughter was so happy to bring home a pair of sterling silver earrings, which I proudly wear.It meant alot that others were thinking, that the dads not being home, to help the kids remember Mother's Day. We have been blessed with so many Angels who have touched our families with kindness. Hugs and thanks to you!
