I'm So, So, CONFUSED!?!?!?!?!
I don't know about you, but all this 'stuff' around the elections is getting kinda out of hand. I mean, when Jimbo is voting for Hillary? Acquiescing to vote for McCain? Not fainting at the sight of Obamaman?
I'm still trying to sort all this out- I really need a ballot that has the choice 'None of the Above' on it- and I'm not talking Write-In, either. That seems to be the cheesy way out; I think I heard someplace that Mickey Mouse gets like 100,000 votes every election cycle. (That must drive Donald Duck nuts).
I recently had the opportunity to chat in front of a local 'constituent group' for one of my Senators- at least once a month they have a breakfast update on things going on at the Capitol. After boning up online and reviewing notes, I was prepped to chat about the Surge, troop morale, conditions in Iraq, etc. Since the party of the Senator was Democrat, I somewhat expected the worst- but given that there was a smattering of every conceivable party present (Dems, Repubs, Indies, etc) it was surprising the reception that I got. To a person, all conceded (including the Senator) that we should ''finish what we start''. None could state that going in in the first place was right, but ALL agreed we should stay til the end- whatever THAT would mean.
Some of the questions included- ''what would a troop reduction look like''; ''what would a sudden pull-out do''; are the troops committed to staying''; ''what is the state of contractors there'' and such. One statement made was most surprising- that the war has cost the states ''billions in funds that we would otherwise have''. I don't know how they can say that- saying we're spending money we don't have (deficit) would be more accurate, but I don't see how they would possibly assume that whatever we spend on Iraq/Afghanistan would necessarily come the state's way- because it wouldn't necessarily do that. That seems to be the main argument we're going to hear going into the general election this year- no matter who is representing which party.
I've posted and posited in the past that we've not seen the worst to come- I firmly believe that. I also believe the convention in Denver for the Dems is gonna be a whopper- just remember that ''there is no bad PR... only wrong spin''.
I'm not yet opening my kimono here- although I'm registered here as a Dem, don't let that fool you. That doesn't mean squat in the big picture. (Just ask Jimbo.) The selection of running mates is going to mean more this year than in years past, IMHO. I also believe that this election could end up looking like the Reagan/Mondale matchup- but I'm not yet certain which direction.
I do know one thing- and this I believe strongly- that whomever is selected by each party better be able to answer one and only one question from me- ''Have you been to a homecoming ceremony for a unit? Why or why not?'' If they can't say they have- screw 'em. To me, that's the most telling question yet...
