"Deebow, are you going to be able to heal up and get back on regular duty harrassing and generally aggravating the Army brass? Damn, son, you got too much talent going to waste simply carping from out in the weeds. They are beginning to think that they can run the military any way that they want since you have been away. Somebody with talent, such as yourself, needs to get back in the saddle and straighten their hind parts out."

I have gotten a couple of these comments before and I realized that I haven't really talked about it.  Some of you don't really know the situation I found myself in right after I returned from Afghanistan.

Without even getting a hang-nail while in the 'Stan, I came home to take my 23 days terminal leave and go back to my job.  I was returning home from work on my motorcycle (my 23rd day of work since I got home) and was struck by a guy driving an SUV who crossed the center-line and drove right into me.

Needless to say; a hang nail became the least of my problems.

My Left leg was broken in 4 places; Femur--closed, high up by the hip and mid shaft, and compound open Tib/Fib Straight across near the ankle with open spots on my shin and down by my heel.

One ambulance ride, 1 virtually amputated foot, 3 operations, six units of blood and 9 days in the hospital later; I was on my way home to begin my recovery.  I lost some of the tendon that makes it so my toes can curl down, but the important one on the top of my foot was saved.

I am now a proud owner of a steel plate in my hip area, two steel rods in my leg, and the hardware to attach it all.

I was up and walking without a brace, crutches or a walker about 3 months after the accident and I am teaching myself to walk right again, with as little a limp as possible.  I am doing my best to restore myself to my position in my unit, but until they figure out my final limitations (I am shooting for none), I won't know if they will retire me early, retain me or restore me to full duty.

Everyone tells me it is a miracle that I am walking right now.  I just think that I didn't survive Afghanistan to give it all up a quarter mile from my house (yeah, really that far away).

So now everyone knows.  I will be back to putting my good leg in their hind parts really soon.

And if chicks dig scars, my wife will have to start carrying a stick.
