» Swiss Afghanistan from THE TEXAS SCRIBBLER
Imagine Afghanistan as brown and tan and rubble-strewn? Some of it is, certainly, but not the Switzerland-like 10,000-feet foothills of the Hindu Kush in these beautiful photos put up by Blackfive of a 9th Cav air assault. Clean out the... [Read More]

Man that's beautiful country. How could a person 'go jihad' in such a beautiful place. I will never understand.

red,
Yeah, that one's 'Shopped all to hell and gone.
I didn't think there was that much green in all of Afghanistan put together.

Certainly a lovely place, at least at that time. Weather over the last few weeks before the photo can make a lot of difference; heck, I've stood on the south rim of the Grand Canyon when it was nearly that green.
I don't see anything in that first photo that the altitude, cloud cover and artistic use of filters wouldn't account for.

I can't get over how great those pictures are. I put the third one up for my desktop wallpaper.
Where ever that is could make some bucks if they could get some tourism going.

point of order: i didn't say it was shopped, just that it looked that way. i'd hope the PAO folks are smarter than the regular media, but releasing something that *looks* like it's fake could lead the unwashed hordes to claim that the Army is releasing fakes, and that could get messy.

There is more to the terrain of Afghanistan then the brown you generally see in pictures of Helmand or Khandhar. 1-91 CAV is in eastern Nuristan – an extremely rugged area that makes up the foothills of the Hindu Kush (foothills in that area being 10,000+ ft). Having spent 16 months in eastern Nuristan and having been afforded the opportunity to see two springs there I can tell you that Nuristan is that green, the mountains are that gorgeous, and there is nothing altered in these photos. It is an unbelievably beautiful part of the country that could have an awesome tourism industry eventually (skiing, hiking, etc.). I base this on my time there as a member of 3-71 CAV, 3rd BDE, 10th Mountain. 1-91 CAV relived us this summer. My condolences for their recent losses in Kamu – God Bless.

I have some great photos from Afghanistan courtesy of son.
It is breath taking. I would love to go there.

Welcome home, Prost. I've often thought the same thing about Afghanistan's tourism potential. Looks just like the Alps.
May the recently fallen Sky Soldiers of the 91st Cav and 503rd Infantry Rest in Peace.
Thanks for posting this, Matt.

Hey, I was briefly with 3-71 CAV out in Naray last spring. Good joes--um, interesting leadership.
But yeah, it was gorgeous out there. I have a few photos on my own site. Everywhere we went after that was desolate by comparison.
