"...6. If you witness someone calling the U.S. Coast Guard non-military, inform them of their mistake...and THEN bust their chops...." - [Blackfive] Rules for Non-Military Personnel

The United States Coast Guard has saved over a million lives and that mark was honored during the US Coast Guard's 217th birthday. EagleSpeak has a great post about it and a video of the Top Ten Coast Guard Rescues. Go and watch that video.
Then check out this from the Blackfive YouTube Channel:

We are also ready, willing, and able to take lives when the situation warrants it.

From some of the dumbass stunts that end up in Coast Guard life saving activities being necessary, I'd say they need to cut back a little.

Thanks for the link - due to an error, since corrected- credit for the "Top Ten List" was accidentally left off my post. The list was compiled by Coast Guard Chief of Public Affairs Jim McPherson to whom all praise for the list belongs.

The most remarkable thing about the Coastie rescue swimmers is how on earth does someone with stones that big float? We all owe them a huge amount of respect and gratitude for the work they do with courage, dedication, and skill.

As a blue water sailor I gave my share of
razzing to the Coasties...I'm sorry that
they didn't include Jimmy Ng's mind blowing
rescue of 5 Crab fisherman on the bearing sea.Flying blind in 100 mph winds no navagation and blinding snow he and his crew
pulled off what should go down as the best
rescue ever...You can find the story in Spike
Walkers book "NIGHTS OF ICE" Life AND Death
on the Bearing sea...
