More reasons for diplomacy with Iran?

Posted By Uncle Jimbo

NOT!

The always on point Corner has a couple of bits about the many problems posed by Iran. It also is a stark reminder of just who we would cede victory to by leaving Iraq.

British Muslims Working With Iran to Develop Nukes   [Andy McCarthy]

The Guardian has this alarming report today about a 20-month investigation by MI-6.  A company run by British Muslims (the article refers to them as "Britons" but also describes them as having ties to "Islamic terrorists abroad" and being "al Qaeda sympathizers") is believed to have a line on the black market (Russian) for weapons-grade uranium, which they were trying to ship to Iran and Sudan.

A British company has been closed down after being caught in an apparent attempt to sell black-market weapons-grade uranium to Iran and Sudan, The Observer can reveal.

Anti-terrorist officers and MI6 are now investigating a wider British-based plot allegedly to supply Iran with material for use in a nuclear weapons programme. One person has already been charged with attempting to proliferate 'weapons of mass destruction'.

Not those peaceful Mullahs who just want to get along, they wouldn't be doing every thing under the sun to get nukes? It takes a powerful bit of willful naivete to reason that the Iranians are not currently at war with us and probably winning. What do I mean they are currently warring on us, well listen to Joe Lieberman.

Lieberman for Secretary of State   [Michael Ledeen]

On Face the Nation, he just called for military strikes against terrorist training camps inside Iran, echoing, ahem, myself lo these several years. He put it perfectly, for my money:

"We've said so publicly that the Iranians have a base in Iran at which they are training Iraqis who are coming in and killing Americans. By some estimates, they have killed as many as 200 American soldiers...if there's any hope of the Iranians living according to the international rule of law and stopping, for instance, their nuclear weapons development, we can't just talk to them...He added, "If they don't play by the rules, we've got to use our force, and to me, that would include taking military action to stop them from doing what they're doing."

"They can't believe that they have immunity for training and equipping people to come in and kill Americans," he said. "We cannot let them get away with it. If we do, they'll take that as a sign of weakness on our part and we will pay for it in Iraq and throughout the region and ultimately right here at home."

Meanwhile, the appeasers over at the State Department, from the spokesman to the secretary herself, are reassuring the world that we're going to continue our conversations, regardless of the current hostage crisis. Ambassador Crocker tries to cover up our nakedness, saying we'd only consider another round of talks when the Iraqi Government issues a formal invitation. But they will. How could they not? They watch our tv, they know about the September deadline, they've seen this administration has no stomach for fighting, above all against journalists and Democrats. They expect us to leave. They expect the Iranians to stay. And who can say they are wrong?

Michael Ledeen was decades ahead of most in noting and attempting to school the rest of the West as to the ongoing agitations of the Iranian regime. The problem lies in rousing any will strong enough to oppose them. None of the Old Euros have any expeditionary power  to speak of beyond a possible air or cruise missile strike, and we are not about to do any more land warring for a while, so what do we do?

If I had more faith in our efforts to destabilize the regime and assist in a popular uprising to overthrow the mullahocracy, I would put my support there. As it is we may end up using Chuck Z's conventional MX solution to their nuke prorogram.
