Op-For's CPT 1LT Noonan on Ft Dix Six
UPDATE- The boy LT informs me that AP promoted him in an article he and Matty O' were quoted in, so back to boot-lickin' LT.
My main man, the former young LT, now promoted well beyond his capabilities to a rank he richly deserves, brings up a good point about the Fort Dix Six, are they terrorists or even wannabe terrorists? Let's hear from Johnny:
Not terrorists.
Yeah, you heard me.
I'm hearing the phrase a ton in the press. Probably because it's easier than defining these idiots in some new category, and for that, I can't really fault the MSM. But I think when we're analyzing the plot, it's important to include target selection in your verbal calculus.
Fort Dix is a military target....which by a strict definition, probably categorizes the six morons into some sort of guerilla fighter category.
There is some good to and fro in the comments there and I figger we can have some fun with this and maybe hack out some kind of naming convention. I agree with Mr. Noonan that the choice of a military target completely changes the situation. If they had targeted civilians there would be no question, bag 'em, tag 'em & frag 'em, but they didn't, they chose to target our military. The next question becomes whether their affiliation, or lack there of, turns them into terrorists. This and their lack of uniforms would be the main sticking points and about both, these are points to consider if we are determining whether they are POWs or enemy combatants not whether they are terrorists. Noonan is right, their choice to directly engage our forces determines that conclusively. Think French Resistance or the Mujahideen in Afghanistan.
As someone who has on occasion conducted military operations while not in uniform, I would certainly oppose the classification of that as terrorism. I believe the proper classification would be spies, guerrillas or saboteurs. Now any of those will get you a nice tight necktie and a short drop, but they are not terrorism.
