Ahmed Shah Massoud
"We consider this our duty -- to defend humanity against the scourge of intolerance, violence, and fanaticism." -- Ahmed Shah Massoud, speaking to the EU in 2001
Ahmed Shah Massoud, a native Afghani educated in Pakistan during the coup and subsequent turmoil during the 70's. The 80's saw Massoud lead a group of freedom fighters who fought both the Taliban and the Soviets. He became a legend, defending his home valley of Panjshir, terrain thought undefendable against the Soviets.
He led efforts to find Osama bin Laden for the CIA and President Clinton in the 90s. He was a thorn in the side of the Taliban who were seeking to guarantee Al Qaeda protection from the Northern Alliance and fighters like Massoud.
Then, he was asked to speak at the European Parliment about Afghanistan where he told of ties between the Taliban and Al Qaeda. Some even say he told of an impending attack...
From Time Magazine's Nation Builder's section on Asian Heroes:
The two Arab TV journalists who had been hanging around for weeks to secure an interview with the storied Afghan military commander Ahmad Shah Massoud finally got their chance to speak with him on Sept. 9, 2001. They set up their gear and asked a question about Osama bin Laden. Then one of them detonated a bomb hidden in a camera, killing himself and mortally wounding Massoud. The journalists were, in fact, al-Qaeda assassins, and it was bin Laden who had ordered the hit just before the 9/11 attacks on the U.S....
That's right, he was assassinated two days before September 11th. Osama feared Massoud and his ability to go after Al Qaeda so he had Massoud killed.
Yesterday, May 17th, 2007, there was a memorial held to honor the Lion of Pahjshir at his new tomb. US Forces were there:
