No "Blaze of Glory" for VA Tech shooter
There were many possible responses to the package of massacre pron that NBC received. They chose to act as media madames and provide the public all the lurid details reaping the reward of ratings money. Unsurprising, but sad none the less. They could have taken the high ground:
"We at NBC News received a package containing text, photos and video from the believed shooter at VA Tech, and have turned all of the original material over to the FBI. Upon review of our copies we have determined that it contains no news worthy information and broadcasting it would simply fulfill the killer's quest for notoriety. In addition it could encourage other disturbed individuals to attempt similar horrific acts in the belief that they would at least garner fame with their death theater. That is not the function of a news organization and we will not pander to the morbid curiosity that we all possess. The families of the victims may schedule private viewings if desired"
I can dream, but I have no real hope that anything resembling restraint or the common good will get any play when our media are involved. So what are our other options? If the glory tapes and pictures are going to get out, then it becomes a question of how they are treated once they are public. See, that whole public thing and the internets allows some serious theme adjustment. Our little nuttah wanted the world to see his pain and suffering and how he was striking with great vengeance and furious anger (ref?). That is all well and good and the media will trot out all number of brain mechanics to discuss what has driven him to this dire strait. All in all they have given this wanker the sympathy and attention he felt cheated out of his entire miserable life, in effect rewarding his slaughter. That is an extremely bad idea and could only encourage others. Heck he even mentioned the Columbine shooters.
Nope, the best we can do now is to mock and belittle him. I realize that this is impolite and unseemly and tacky and whatever. But look at the situation and you can see what I am trying to do. I am picturing the other dozens of deranged loons currently suffering the type of torment that can drive you to shoot everyone. I am considering their reaction to this incident and their reaction to our reaction. If we humanize and memorialize and edify this sick bastard, we show them how to end their pain and go out in a "Blaze of Glory". If we show them that we will use any glory media against them, we may deter a massacre and deal with the much better alternative of one poor soul blowing his own brains out.
So I am requesting Photoshops of the shooter, the more derogatory and mocking the better. I apologize to those who will be offended, but I consider this a necessary public service. I will lead with mine and post any others that advance the cause of massacre icon-destroying. My condolences to the family and friends of the victims and I hope they understand.
