Two bits of quality reading
Two bits of very important thinking and writing to note that deserve serious attention.
First a Q&A session with Bernard Lewis, one of the top Middle Eastern scholars and an all around brilliant thinker, who offers a sober look at Iran and how we all must deal with the challenges surrounding it. While it offers considerable substance it is certainly not red meat. It gave me pause for thought about the wisdom of whacking the Iranian nuke facilities. We may be in a position to wait the Mullahs out. Their economy is in a shambles, the nuke program doesn't appear to be running as scheduled and their entire populace is very unhappy. They still pose huge problems, but I am going to reconsider my call for MX and Tomahawk surgery for a bit.
One of my favorite bits discussed Anwar Sadat and Jimmah Cahtah's efforts to secure an Egyptian/Israeli peace agreement. Sadat throws the Soviets out of Egypt and figgers Jimmah will help him. Prof. Lewis dishes the skinny.
Then he hoped that Washington would help him, instead of which Washington produced the Vance-Gromyko Agreement, a sort of diplomatic carve up, in effect giving Egypt back to the Soviets. That was [former president Jimmy] Carter's real contribution to the peace process. All the rest of it is imaginary; imaginary is the polite word.
Heh.
Then we have what may be my favorite annual writing collection, Jay Nordlinger's Davos Journal from the World Economic Forum. This gathering of the folks who essentially run our planet is fascinating for many reasons; the first is Nordlinger's brilliant writing. He writes in a very informal style, yet the substance and insights he relays are anything but light. He brings you there and lets you see the high and mighty interact with each other and the press, which includes his own questioning. I cannot think of another bit of reporting that brings you into the belly of the beast like this. He writes one dispatch a day and each is a gem as he interacts with and illuminates the thinking of the power brokers. Incidentally this is where F Jacques Kerry was kissing up to Iran's ex-President Khatami and calling us international pariahs.
