Someone We Won't Forget
Steeljaw Scribe has the story of Navy Commander Peter Mongilardi Jr., of Haledon, NJ. CDR Mongilardi was airwing commander of CAG 15 (USS CORAL SEA) in the summer of 1965. CAG Mongilardi was shot down and killed while on a mission over North Vietnam on June 25, 1965.
In October, 1994 a joint American/Vietnamese team under the auspices of the Joint Task Force for Full Accounting (JTFFA) fully excavated the crash site said to be that of CDR Mongilardi. DNA technology at the time was not advanced enough to confirm the recovered remains were those of CAG, but with the news release on January 29, 2007 that the remains were positively identified, CDR Peter Mongilardi JR. will be repatriated to his nation, returned to his family and he will be buried on April 11 at Arlington National Cemetery near Washington D.C.
It's been nearly 42 years, but we will never forget, we will never stop looking.
As Steeljaw Scribe puts it:
Welcome home, CAG...rest easy now that your journey is complete.
