Freedom of Religion or Freedom FROM Religion

Posted By Blackfive

Below is an email from a concerned reader about the latest story on Officers in uniform supporting religious or political groups.  Check this out:

I'm a Gulf War vet, I did nine years of active service in the Army, and I've worked at a major installation since '95 as a contractor.  Our chaplains have always been supportive of our soldiers, their families and our mission.  I never felt compelled to do *anything* religious.  So, check this out:

A Fox News story had me asking, "who are these people?"

Inspector General Looking Into Christian Group's Film Taped at Pentagon
"A Pentagon spokesman said Monday the Defense Department had received a letter from a religious freedom watchdog group raising questions about whether the access granted to the Christian Embassyviolated the Constitution or regulations prohibiting military endorsement of any one religion or religious organization."

"Ruh-roh!" says I.  I headed for the web site of the aggrieved religious group.

"The Military Religious Freedom Foundation is dedicated to ensuring that all members of the United States Armed Forces fully receive the Constitutional guarantees of religious freedom to which they and all Americans are entitled by virtue of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment."

Well, gee, that sounds pretty good!  Clicking around their site, however, reveals surprisingly little about what they actually do, besides hassling Christian groups filming Christian officers talking about Christian topics.  So, who runs this outfit?

Michael L. “Mikey” Weinstein
"Michael L. “Mikey” Weinstein, is the Founder and President of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation...Mikey is an attorney, businessman and political activist.  Among his accomplishments is the launching of the campaign to protect the religious freedoms of members of the United States Armed Forces by campaigning for restoration of the constitutionally mandated separation of church-and-state in the military."

They're not campaigning for freedom OF religion!  They're campaigning for freedom FROM religion!  These are some of the clowns that had the Navy prohibit Navy chaplains from mentioning God, or praying in His name.  I hope you can shine some light on these nsnakes.  "Religious Freedom," indeed.  They'd have us in Leavenworth for practicing our chosen religion!

Hooah!
