Protesting nothing at the School of the Americas

A staple of the protest festival circuit for the left is the former School of the Americas (SOA) at Ft. Benning, GA. This is a place where the evil Reagan regime used to import innocent farm boys from Central America and brainwashed them into cold-blooded killers sent back to run death squads and assist the spread of US imperialism. That may sound over the top, but it could easily have come from any of the folks who headline these protestapaloozas. They could not be further from the truth, but they zealously bemoan the horrors committed by students of this training ground for slaughter.

I know a fair amount about SOA and actually guest instructed two classes there in the '90s. In addition I have trained soldiers from more than two dozen countries most of which had human rights abuses as their standard operating procedures. I remember standing in front of a class of fresh-faced young lieutenants from a Pacific Rim ally asking what they would do if they captured members of the insurgent group they fought. The only disagreement was which tool was best to beat them with or if one should be shot pour encourager les autres (to encourage the others, a French Foreign Legion technique).

The many reasons SOA was hardy what the left says.
