SZIMA, Alex J. passed away September 13, 2006 at his daughter's home in Charlotte, NC. He was born May 24, 1920 to Mary Gyulvesi and Alex Szima (both Hungarian immigrants). He attended Holy Name Catholic School & Roosevelt High School. He joined the CCC's and worked in Montana, before finding his calling as 1st Sergeant HQ Co, 1st Battalion Rangers under William O. Darby. After training with the British Commandos at Achnacarry, Scotland , he was among a select group of 50 American Rangers who took part in the first Allied Invasion of Occupied France at Dieppe August 19,1942. Although a total disaster in loss of life, the knowledge gained with this raid enabled the Allied forces to regroup and successfully carry out the D-Day invasion in 1944. He went on to lead a rifle squad North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. He was near mortally wounded in the Battle of Monte Cassino in November, 1943. He underwent 3 years of reconstructive surgeries at Valley Forge. He married Madeline Haller in 1945. They moved to San Diego, but returned to Dayton in 1951 to raise a family. He was a creative entrepreneur and developed new technologies in water conditioning. He and his wife remained active in the Magyar Club, and the WWII Ranger Battalion Association. In 2002 the town of Dieppe, France celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Allied Landing and Alex was the lone surviving American Ranger to attend. He is survived by his daughter, Madeline, her husband, Mark German, and their daughters, Alexis and Erica, all of Charlotte, and his brother, George, of Dayton, along with numerous nieces and nephews. A visitation and celebration of his life will be held Sunday, September 17th at Magetti-Gavin Funeral home from 3-6PM. A memorial service will be held Monday, at 10 AM at Magetti's followed by 11 AM burial at the National Cemetery. Published in the Dayton Daily News from 9/16/2006 - 9/17/2006.
