US violates rights of British Muslims

I cannot believe we were tapping the terrorist’s communications, what a disgraceful violation of civil liberties. It’s too bad some patriotic reporter at the NY Times didn’t leak whatever program we used to violate the privacy of these deeply religious men. From Time:

In the two or three days before the arrests, the cell was going operational, and authorities were pressed into action. MI5 and Scotland Yard agents tracked the plotters from the ground, while a knowledgeable American official says U.S. intelligence provided London authorities with intercepts of the group’s communications

Gee I wonder how we managed to get that intelligence, maybe tapping somebody’s phone? or examining financial transactions? the horrifying actions of the police state we currently live in. If these clowns had managed to knock even one bird out of the air, it would have been a huge victory, but the diligent efforts of the Brits, Pakistanis and us have stopped that. People have talked about the effect dropping a couple of planes into the ocean would have, but even better would be a fireball on final approach to a US airport.

Yesterday a federal court ruled that private individuals, i.e. media jackals, can be prosecuted for receiving and distributing classified information. Happily this means that the publication of information compromising our efforts to gather the very intelligence that stopped this plot is a crime. The amazing thing is that we needed to be told that, it would have seemed self-evident to me. I am very impressed with an investigation as large as this actually lasting 8 months without compromise, either by those being watched or the jackals breaking a story. Cooperation across at least three countries and surveillance of a couple of dozen suspects represents a major undertaking and a huge coup in stopping this.

I wish I was surprised that some on the left are so self-absorbed and deluded to think that this information was manipulated as a response to the victory of a Dem in a Senate primary. WTF? The scale of this plot was huge, Ned Lamont is a gnat on a dog’s ass at best. The idea that once again all events are orchestrated by Rove in response to crush democracy and Democrats in particular is ludicrous. The fact that the left has already begun touting this as yet another example of the adminstration using terror as a political weapon. The inability of these people to fathom the actual danger to our way of life posed by these medieval obscurantists (a George Galloway phrase) is stunning. They somehow believe that if they get a chance to reason with bin Laden and the boys they can show him the error of his ways, or if we sit down with Ahmadinejad in Tehran we can convince him the Jews aren’t all that bad. The foolishness of this is mind-numbing and rooted in the same liberal guilt that leads them to apologize for our status as sole superpower.

This was vindication of the idea that we should actively pursue terrorists worldwide and use every means we have to spy on them, especially electronically. The next time Russ Feingold pokes his head up whining about us tracking phone calls, I hope somebody reminds him that if we listened to him we could be hearing the reports of 9/11/06, when Al Qaeda managed to top their body count five years to the day.
