Jack Idema calls from Afghanistan

So I'm getting ready for lunch and my phone rings, and I hear that hollow sound that signifies Sat phone or international long distance. Lo and behold it is Jack Idema calling from prison in Afghanistan. I recently had seen some blogs with Free Jack Idema links and I asked here if anyone had info different from mine which threw the BS flag on him. I got a bunch of messages from his ardent supporters that were less than cordial and so I stopped paying attention. My failure to answer the charges that I was a poseur or just full of shite led to more accusations and since I was not interested in being part of a shitestorm I popped smoke.

Well once Jack had me on the line he lived up to his rep as a hot head by alternately threatening me with lawyers and ass whippings. That was fun for about 10 minutes at which point our mexican standoff was, lawyers don't scare me and my parry to the ass whipping would come in .357 caliber, I'm a lover not a fighter.

The initial fireworks done, he poked at my credentials and came to the conclusion that I am who I am. As we continued to talk more names that both of us know came up and the possibility that he could be vouched for emerged. For those who don't know, in most of the Spec Ops community, all services more or less but especially in SF there is a very simple process whereby you can establish someone's bona fides.

The question is:

"Do you know Jack Idema?" There are two responses

"Yeah, he's a good mofo" or

"Yeah, he's a nice guy"

The first means you personally vouch that he can be trusted completely, the second is the kiss of death. I already had two kisses for Jack and nobody had taken his back. Now this has to be someone known to me, or it is no good. He got some kudos, but not the required one degree of separation. We did a little more round and round and eventually came to something of a truce. I will follow up confidentially with the names he provides, and if I get a good mofo report I will apologize here. I have less than zero interest in slagging someone undeservedly and if i was wrong I will bite the bullet.

All in all it was the most surreal and entertaining 45 minutes I have spent recently, and my co-workers here at the paper were definitely shell shocked at the end of a conversation about beatings double taps to the sternum and Afghan prisons. Thanks for the call Jack, I will advise.
