The North Koreans Launched at Hawaii and Missed?

Posted By Blackfive

Just breaking over the last twenty minutes on FoxNews TV.  That's the first analysis from Japan and not definitive as of 10PM EST.  Could NK really be that stupid?

Lots of talk about North Korea by the various military men and women, spouses, and vets at MilBlogs.

They knew it wasn't going to travel there. Another I spy game they're playing. They're trying to raise the stakes, but Bush ain't reciprocating. Yet Bush also hasn't folded. Stalemate.

Guess we all better strap our helmets on!!

The DPRK thinks that the US is like the ROK or Japan, and will roll over when you shoot a missile over our territory. Well might they think that -- when Clinton was running the show, we rolled over when they shot a missile over _Japan's_ territory.

If we're going to have a different kind of discussion with them in the future, we need to explain to them that the US isn't playing by those rules any more.

Wonder what this information will do to the moonbatology of Hawaiian separation from the US that was going on?

Will they come to their senses or will they go full throttle moonbat and decide that separation would protect them from the rage of the NK despot?

If so, that couldn't be called Dhimmitude properly, more like just plain old dumbshits.

.

B52 SAC geezer - A tiny minority of Hawaii residents support the Hawaiian Sovereignty movement. I'm sure they remain as moonbatarrific as ever.

Can someone tell me what kind of damage this could do if the nutjob is actually aiming at Hawaii and is successful next time? Most of my family is still there.

omg, it's like kim *BEGGING* for a beating.

Well Dear Leader, you missed me, Makaha is within your range, but your sh#tty little fireworks show missed. i guess we can now call the No-Dong the Broken Dong.

BTW thanks for making me remember why I need to blog.......

What North Koreans do you mean? Those living in the artificial prison state named North Korea or those living in the United States and claiming themselves "American liberals"? I find the latter ones even worse than the former ones.

Ya know...time was when attacking Hawaii might have been considered an act of war...

I'm bemused.

Could it be NK is 'saying' they aimed at HI? A small group of islands thousands of miles away would be hard to hit. So, missing HI wouldn't be a face-losing as if they shot at China and missed. Although, China would shoot back.

NK is just a proxy tool used by China to annoy the US and gain leverage.

Confronting NK head on is not the answer.

Pressuring China to take care of the issue is the smart approach.

The only tool we have is our ability to choose what we want to buy. China's booming economy is heavily dependent upon US imports. We don't want our government getting directly involved in some sort of trade dispute - but if US citizens acted as the agents and decided not to buy Chinese products, then they would get the message loud and clear.

Heck, we wouldn't even have to do it for a long time. If the movement was organized and got the required media support, the message would get through very quickly. We don't have to crush the Chinese economy, we simply have to show that we could hurt them if we wanted to.

US citizens need to assume more responsibility. Not in the sense (like the NYT) that we should disclose national secrets, but rather that we have soft power that is far more compelling than any amount of State department rhetoric, F16 deals to Taiwan, or navy exercises in the middle of the Pacific.

DO NOT BUY ANYTHING MADE IN CHINA!

PASS IT ON --->

Charles,

Right On! I’ve been boycotting Chinese made goods for years.

Did you realize that the Chinese were at the Pacific exercises you mentioned? That’s right, we freakin' invited them for Ch**t sakes. People get upset about our ports being control of a ME country but we invite the effing Chinese to observe our military maneuvers. WTF!!!!

Charles, Tim,

SPOT ON gentlemen! Short of ammunitions, money is the next best weapon. Of course, China was probably involved in the NK counterfeiting of Ben Franklins. Can't get it via legitimate business, print it...

China is not an overt enemy of the US. Both countries have various interests, and many coincide. But the NK thing is serious and China could stop it in a heartbeat. I have nothing against good relations, joint military exercises, and sorts of other various hoopla.

But if we want China to solve the problem in NK, I think our wallets are the only way to go.

"Short of ammunitions, money is the next best weapon"

Money is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better than ammunition. But the only way for it to work is for people to do it - and loudly - and explain why.

1. NK is a problem;
2. China could solve problem in a heartbeat
3. China deliberately chooses not to
4. I therefore choose to boycott China as a means of peaceful protest until they solve problem.

NK has been keeping Chinese trains that were sending them food and supplies.

They return the crews sans trains.

I don't think that the Red Chinese gummint is all too happy about that.

Jong Il is a couple patties short of a Big Mac.

.

“Money is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better than ammunition.” Well, yeah… I admit that my assignment of weight to the two options was bassackwards, but this sort of nonsense from DPRK has been going on and on since the truce was declared. Now with nukes and ICBM’s (even in the developmental stages) it’s darned near close to real serious.

I’m concerned that Japan may at some point decide that they must become self-sufficient in the defense of their own interests. Rebuild their army and navy to counter China and re-embrace the Bushido code of their ancestors.

Japans current reliance upon the US for defense is a good thing, but with DPRK ratcheting up the threats and as you say and as wee see UNSC meeting after UNSC meeting, China is doing little to nothing to tone down Kim Elvis Il while building their military at an amazing rate… I see a bad moon rising.

I would love to Boycott China, but, ssense our government official make deals with them like making them a partner in free trade, and NAFTA what did we expect?China isn't stupid, like some of our groveling officials like Clinton, and some of these other types who have been wheeling and dealing against the US.

Lisa,

It is correct of the government to use engagement with China. I highly doubt that China is part of NAFTA. There is no point in overt threats and hostility because we are not going to fight China over this. Not because we are wimps, but because it would not benefit our country. Shaking a stick and barking at NK is even more useless. That is pretty much what they wanted to begin with.

What individual people choose to do with their hard earned money is quite different though. It is not the government that buys cheap sneakers and plastic toys. It is me and you.

People find it too easy to blame the govermnet for things that we as individuals control.

US consumers - if they were to be organized and motivated, are one of the most powerful resources our country has.

Were they really shooting at HI? Earlier in the day, I believe it was Fox News or maybe CNN, reported a Japanese source as saying the NKs never had control of the missile. If they never had control ofit, how could they aim it. The later FOX report said the "aimed at HI" conclusion was made by where the dud fell into the sea, you know kinda in the direction of HI. If they never had control of it, it could just as easily fallen in the direction of Moscow.

I don't doubt that Lil' Kim is crazy enough to fire a rocket over the US, but I don't see any convincing data in the FOX/CNN/Japanese reports to support this.

I think they could pretty easily estimate potential targets based upon trajectory, speed, etc. But accuracy of estimate depends upon where in flight path it was measured. If it was still in early ascension, there is no way to know. If it had already reached its zenith, then they could make a rough guess.

One report said the missile was tracked for 7-8 minutes. Another said it only flew for 42 seconds.

I tend to think that 'Hawaii target' news is just sensationalism.

Charles,

“China is not an overt enemy of the US”. No, but there not our friends. Their commies, nuff said.

“I have nothing against good relations, joint military exercises…” Charles, nothing joint about it. Strictly one sided on our part unfortunately.

Bruce,

"China is doing little to nothing to tone down Kim Elvis Il while building their military at an amazing rate… I see a bad moon rising."

They have money to burn because we buy their stuff.

I don't think we are anywhere near a major crisis in the region. NK is just an annoyance tool used by China. NK is dangerous and unpredictable (proliferation mainly), but I don't see the Chinese allowing them to start any major conflicts. NK is a useful tool only insofar as they can piss us off, and give China leverage when we then go to them asking for help to rein in their little buddy.

This will get resolved when China has to come to us for favors. Pre-payment for the favor will be ill kim's head. Until that time, China/NK will continue their baiting game.

But what on earth would make China come to us for help?

Consumer awareness leading to a grass-roots boycott of Chinese goods, withhold purchases from Wal-Mart or something along those lines. Now who was it that mentioned that? ;-}

I agree that DPRK is baiting, and that China has from all appearances, a virtually non-existent grip on their leash. The bottom line is that they want US treasure, bribes if you will. That and the attention we have to give to the situation is a drain on our nation which may serve to satisfy some level of Chinese foreign policy goals with regard to the US. As someone said (I can't recall exactly who or where I read the comment) DPRK is acting like a two year old throwing a tantrum.

The truly amazing part of this at least to me is the noise rising from the left on what the administration should or should not be doing. As if the previous administrations dealings with DPRK were anything to include in the Congressional record!

The last neuron spurt/electrical impulse for this moment is, other than allowing us to 'keep our friends close and our enemies closer' in an intel sort of way no doubt, what the heck does the UN accomplish?

And so I conclude this session of disjointed musing on a beautiful Saturday morning.

Never trust mainstream news...

Throw mainstream news into the toilet...
