Doing the "Right" Thing

Posted By Froggy

I find it very interesting that within a week of the news of an impending North Korean missile test, a whole host of former Democrat office holders are now clamoring for the US to PRE-EMPTIVELY destroy that missile BEFORE it is even launched.  How can one account for this newfound fondness for pre-emption and unilateralism in an era in which both have been consistently pilloried as the tactics employed by an imperialist cowboy Hitlerian oil whore?  Are we to believe now that the US military is NOT over extended and embroiled in a bloody "quagmire" in Iraq which has left us war weary and unable to take on the important work of hunting down Usama bin Laden?

Although it is not uncommon to see Democrats flip flopping on a variety of issues, in this case their flip flop is in the wrong direction and clearly serves a political purpose.  Two of these former Clinton administration officials were intimately involved in the "negotiations" with North Korea which allowed them to develop a nuclear weapon in the first place.  To them, destroying a missile on the pad might serve as a little payback for having been unceremoniously duped by Kim Jong Il 12 short years ago.  Besides it's very easy to talk a tough game when you aren't going to be held accountable for the consequences if things go sideways.  Had these two hawks been a bit tougher when they were running things, we may not be in this position today.

More importantly, Democrats calling for striking the DPRK missile are doing nothing more than making a dare that they know the President can't and won't deliver on.  The purpose all along in their anti-war antics was to shift public opinion such that President Bush would find entering into military actions apart from Iraq and Afghanistan politically unfeasible.  I'm not so sure that they have acheived that, but they are betting on the fact that they have.  They and their cohorts in the MSM are looking to goad the President into a military action so that when the missile test is allowed to commence, they will be in a position to decry the President for not taking action.  Getting to the Right of the President on a non-Iraq national security issue before the November election could be just what they need to burnish their defeatist image.

The political cynicism of this act is just as reprehensible as what they are advocating in the evacuation of Iraq to Okinawa.  Once again they are completely discounting the potential consequences of their policy prescriptions in order to acheive a short term electoral advantage.  Just as Iraq would descend into a hellish terror state if we were to precipitously depart, attacking North Korean soil with no plan or capability to repel an all out assault of the South would endanger millions of lives.  Unless they are advocating a strategy that calls for us to conduct a massive nuclear strike against China's neighbor in the event the nutty Dictator decides to bum rush Seoul, the casualties amongst South Koreans, US troops, AND THEIR FAMILIES would be catastrophic and would amount to 10 times those incurred in Iraq to date within DAYS.

What I wonder about is whether these 'retired' Democrats will also speak out against their party's constant criticism against the war in Iraq and the aggressive approach towards Iran. That would be a wise decision. [Read More]
