Scott Ritter agrees the UN is useless

UPDATE: I have been hacked, and some hack has added my moniker to the title of this post. So now many of you will know it is me and instantly click away. I suspect Matty O'. But on the HA tip, Fred Schoeneman asks the pertinent question.

The Guardian in the UK enjoys a well-deserved reputation as the fish wrap of choice for lefties of all flavors. Strange thing is they just printed weapons inspector and former Sadaam retainer Scott Ritter with one of the strongest cases against the UN, multi-lateralism and Old-European lefty ideas that I have ever read. Bravo to the Grauniad! I do have a few quibbles though:

the European nations taking the lead on the Iranian issue - the UK, France and Germany - will meet on May 2 in Paris with representatives from Russia, China and the United States as a precursor for a meeting of the security council on May 3. The United States has already made clear its intent to introduce a draft resolution under Chapter VII of the UN charter, elevating Iran's obstinacy to the level of a clear and present danger to international peace and security, and paving the way for the imposition of stringent economic sanctions against Iran.

While such measures appear on the surface to represent sound, measured diplomatic responses, the reality is that once the United States introduces a Chapter VII resolution, even in draft form, war with Iran is all but assured. Russia and China, both permanent members of the security council with veto powers, have made clear their collective objection to any Chapter VII action against Iran.....If the Russians and Chinese balk over the imposition of Chapter VII-linked measures against Iran, as they have indicated they will, then the Bush administration will simply declare that the security council has become impotent and irrelevant in dealing with threats that it has itself declared to exist

And there you have it, he spins it to say that W would be improperly calling the UN impotent, but he made the case himself that they are exactly that. The US allowed the Quartet of France, Germany, Russia and the Brits to do that Old School Europe voodoo, and they accomplished zip, zero, nada. And all the while the Mullahs had their worker ants underground in the desert spinning uranium into the big equalizer.
