Reader Glenmore at Blackfive reminds me of an important aspect I read and failed to highlight.

"Three officers - one brigade and two company level, if I recall correctly - were recently reprimanded and/or re-assigned in connection with what seemed to be this same incident. That is a pretty strong indicator that 'something wasn't right' about the incident, though it still doesn't come close to indicating a war crime took place (maybe poor fire discipline or lack of honesty in AAR instead?)"

Absolutely right, I am hoping for the least of possible evils, but The Nation goes for the other extreme.

Katrina Vanden Heuvel can't be this foolish, can she?

First let me say that if this was a massacre I hope all involved suffer the greatest punishment possible. But I am skeptical, and mind-numbing ignorance like this doesn't help, Ms. Vanden Heuvel writes:

"As the Los Angeles Times reported on Saturday, this much is known to be true: On November 19, after a roadside bomb killed Lance Cpl. Miguel Terrazas, 15 Iraqi civilians - including seven women and three children - were allegedly shot and killed by a unit of US Marines operating in Haditha, Iraq."

Give me a minute please. That was a stunningly dense way to present that point. She leads with "this much is known to be true" then backs that up with "were allegedly shot". So we have certainty that there is an allegation that something bad may have happened. This metaphysical certitude about the existence of the allegation obviously makes it true, eh? I mean "the LA Times reported" that purt near guarantees it there, and now Ms. Vanden adds her knowing of the truth, to the LA Times reporting and suddenly the Marines are good as guilty.
