The Flight 93 Memorial - Part 2 (8 months later) - A Crescent is not just a Crescent
I'm getting some flack (somewhat deserved flack) over a comment that I made back in February about the Flight 93 Memorial. I actually liked the crescent design based on the experience of those visiting the ground where Flight 93 crashed. I commented to someone who objected to the symbolism of the crescent (representing Islam) that "sometimes a crescent is just a crescent."
Crescent of Embrace is pretty much the only option [ (F)Light is the other] where you are elevated above the crash site. It's a clean design. A mixture of park and observation deck - visitors would have an opportunity to walk along the edge of the site. Take a look at all of the options. These have been up at the Memorial web site for a long time.
From the air, due to the red trees planted, it will look like a Red Crescent. The other designs use the same trees - I don't know if there were requirements on the tree type or not.
There are a lot of conspiracy claims around this memorial. I work with architects quite a bit and am part of my company's strategy and expansion team - we look at building and design and experience every week. I don't doubt that this Red Crescent is a coincidence - that design experts (i.e. architects) know what they're doing and this was somehow intentional. The claims that the black bricks are reminiscent of Mecca and that the crescent faces Mecca might be true.
Regardless of those claims about all of the other aspects of the design, I think a Red Crescent would be very, very insensitive to the families, the victims, and us. Just based on the fact that it's a Red Crescent should be enough to say, "Next design, please."
In short, I was wrong about the design being just a crescent.
However, I would like to see a clean, elevated place to observe the hallowed ground where heroes died to save others - heroes who knew full well that would probably die, but acted anyway.
What would happen if an elevated platform crisscrossed the area - maybe a cross? What reaction would that receive?
Where the @#$% is the &%$#ing ACLU on this?
Michelle Malkin has a lot more about this - pictures and links. We should get this design removed from consideration (let alone awarding it).

We are fighting a war for heavens sake. Would we have put swastikas on WWII memorials to reach out to Nazis? I don’t think so. With enough pressure, as we have seen with all the 911 memorials, the families’ wishes always take back seat to other peopl... [Read More]
