Should Gitmo Go?

Posted By Blackfive

While Amnesty International backs off it's claim that Gitmo is a "gulag" (and admits that it was done to get attention rather than be accurate), Senator Biden wants to end the use of Gitmo as a propaganda tool.

Sen. Biden wants to shut it down and move the prisoners.  Mmmkay.  So, Senator, what happens when the prisoners claim abuses of themselves and their Korans at the next facility?  We shut that one down and move the prisoners again?

The problem isn't the facility.  The problem is the perception of a lack of process of determining who should be there as an inmate AND the media's determination to find anything that might be published as an abuse.  This is compounded by Al Qaeda's knowledge of the media (reports of the Al Qaeda manual specifying that captured terrorists should claim that they were abused).

Uncle Jimbo has some ideas about holding a tribunal.

I agree in part.

For those guilty - No death penalty (we don't want to lose information).

For those presumed innocent - I think we should monitor the ones we let go.  They may lead us back to more important catches - especially after several of them have resumed terrorist activities.

But will this solve the perception problem?  Probably not.

What do you think?

John Hinderaker at the Weekly Standard has a take on it, too.
