Happy Father's Day!

This morning Little Blackfive is going to buy me breakfast.  I love chilaquiles so we're going to a Mexican restaurant for brunch.  He's been making a big production out of it and wants to use his piggy bank money to pay for it.  It'll be funny walking into the place with Little Blackfive proudly toting his bank.  I'll have to figure out how to get the money back into his bank later.

I get a few requests every now and then for more about Little Blackfive.  He's four and getting more and more independent every day.  He is very precocious.  And he's an absolute riot, too.  Just to prove my point...

Recently, my wife took Little Blackfive and Pinkfive to JCPenney to get their pictures taken.  Pinkfive is ten months old and teething so she's a bit grumpy.  So, my wife and the photographer were having a tough time getting her to smile during her portrait shot.  They were clapping their hands, singing 'Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star', and smiling until their jaws were going to lock.

Then, all of sudden, Pinkfive smiled wide and started laughing. 

My wife ordered, "Quick!  Take the picture!"

Still wondering what made Pinkfive laugh, she and the photographer turned around to see Little Blackfive with his pants around his ankles, standing there in his Thomas the Tank Engine underwear, thumbs in his ears and wiggling his fingers at his little sister...seriously, he knows how to get a laugh.

So, my wife then calls me at the office to tell me what happened - half-laughing and half-accusing me of teaching that trick to him.

I asked, "Was he singing 'Fly Me to the Moon'?"

Mrs. Blackfive feigning disappointment in her husband but unable to stop laughing, "Matty!"

Another incident that made me proud of him was at a birthday party a few weeks ago when one of the neighbor kids took a toy away from Pinkfive.  It kind of shocked her but I think she wasn't really interested in it anyway.  This one kid pushes the other kids around all of the time.  I was waiting for the bully-kid's mom to do something about it before intervening (she usually doesn't).

Little Blackfive looked him in the eye and said, "You give that back to my sister."

And the little bully gave it back.  Little Blackfive kept checking on his sister for awhile to make sure that he didn't do that again. 

So, I'll be enjoying the day surrounded by family (and probably laughing about the picture story again and trying to figure out why the Kookabura Song is the only song that calms Pinkfive down).  And I'll be thinking of those Dads in Iraq and Afghanistan who can't be with their families this Father's Day.
