On this edition of my Leaders Book Notes I would like to talk about an incredible program developed to honor our spouses, parents, veterans and the employers of our citizen Soldiers who support our Army every day.  It is called the Freedom Team Salute and I want every Soldier to know it is their duty to nominate those who have supported them. 

Over the last year, the outpouring of support from the American people has remained strong.  The Army leadership felt it was only right to honor our staunchest advocates, those who share in the sacrifice of our service, our families.  Our families, along with those who have walked in our shoes, our veterans, and the employers who sacrifice while their citizen Soldiers are performing their duties deserver special recognition.  And so the Freedom Team Salute launched this month in an effort to let all those who support us know that we appreciate their dedication and loyalty.

The Freedom Team Salute (FTS) program allows visitors to the website (freedomteamsalute.army.mil) to nominate a spouse, a parent, a veteran (honorably discharged veterans can nominate themselves) or an employer to receive an FTS package.  Once submitted, the package normally arrives to the designee’s address within 4-6 weeks.  It is very regularly an unexpected but much appreciated surprise for your supporter and reinforces that the Army always takes care of its own, whether in uniform or a close supporter.  Nominees will receive an Army lapel pin, an Army decal, bumper sticker for your car, a certificate and letter signed by the Secretary of the Army and the Chief of Staff of the Army thanking them for their support.

We are an Army at war, supporting a nation at war.  That nation supports us everyday with everything from care packages, to letters, to their prayers.  We should be proud to know we are serving the people of the United States as they are proud of our service. 

Soldiers today are very busy and we don’t always take time to truly appreciate the loyalty, dedication and sacrifice of those closest to us.  The FTS program gives us an opportunity to pay tribute and thank them all for their support. 

I encourage leaders at every level to talk the program up, then lead by example and nominate someone themselves.  Programs like this only exist if we participate.  My goal is to have every single Soldier nominate someone for an FTS “thank you” package.  Thanks to all of you for what you’re doing, and what you continue to do to accomplish the mission.  Hooah.
