Former Blackfive Soldier Seeks Internship

Posted By Blackfive • [May 11, 2005]

One of my former troops, Staff Sergeant Steve, just came off Active Duty and resumed his law school studies which were interupted in the middle of his second year at the University of Illinois.

The War on Terror pulled a lot of instructors from the Intelligence Center at Fort Huachuca (Arizona) and Steve was activated to teach at the Intelligence School.  Because he returned in the middle of his second year of law school, he has missed quite a few intern opportunities.  Our Band of Brothers has worked a few contacts on his behalf and now I'm resorting to asking the blogosphere for help...

To give you an idea of the caliber of Staff Sergeant Steve, here's the letter I wrote for his application to law school:

To whom it may concern-

This letter is in reference to my strong recommendation for the admission of Mr. Steven H. to the Law School. I believe that the Law School would greatly benefit from a student of Mr. H’s caliber-particularly, if group work and leadership are part of the curriculum.

From 1996-1999, I was Mr. H’s Company Commander (general manager) in the U.S. Army Reserve. Mr. H. was a Counter-Intelligence Special Agent with responsibility for planning and conducting counter-intelligence investigations by applying military and civil law to matters of national security. During Mr. H’s first year of assignment to my company, he conducted several successful counter-intelligence cases.

I was impressed with his ability to interview and interact with Sergeants, Officers, and civilian personnel that, not only greatly outranked him, but also had many more years of experience. Despite only having his badge for less than 3 years, he built strong, concise, and well-documented cases that resulted in increased security of Top Secret intelligence. As a result of his exemplary contributions, I promoted Mr. H. above his peers and assigned him the supervisory responsibility for seven other Special Agents.

Additionally, Mr. H. was selected from a group of over two hundred Special Agents to be an instructor at the prestigious British Army (Military Intelligence) Interrogation School. Mr. H. received a commendation from the British Army for his comprehensive instruction of the conduct of American counter-intelligence investigations. As a result of his participation, Mr. H. also became well versed in British military and civil law and was instrumental in several joint British-American investigations.

Overall, Mr. H. is one of the most outstanding Special Agents and Soldiers that I have had the honor of managing and serving with. His depth of character, sense of humor, leadership ability and strong motivation will add immense value to the experience of all at the Law School. I emphatically recommend Steven H. for admission to the Law School.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you.

Actually, I promoted him twice and he was decorated for his work with 101st Airborne Division ACE - our mission supported the 101st (and he became Air Assault qualified to work with them).  He also volunteered to spend a year with the 1st Cavalry Division in Bosnia where he ran Counter-Intelligence operations.

Staff Sergeant Steve has an MBA from Notre Dame and is wrapping up his second year of Law School at the University of Illinois.

He is looking for an internship in Chicago that will lead to a job in finance, strategic management or law.  He can work full-time through the summer, but will need two days per week to attend law school classes in Champaign-Urbana.

Quite frankly, he is one of the best Sergeants I've ever worked with and I've tried endlessly to talk him into getting a Commission.

So, please pass this post on to anyone you might know who may be able to help Steve secure a great job.  He's not the type to be satisfied with only getting the coffee or hanging around just to improve his resume - no matter how great the title may be...  I used to tell him that, someday, I'd be working for him.

I will forward you his resume if there's an interest.

Thanks.
