Operation Matador - MilBlogger Round Up
First, read Major Delaplane's Fire Power Forward (Army MilBlogger in Iraq Afghanistan) reports about listening to Marines calling for medevac...and being powerless to help...
Now on to Iraq - Quite a few readers are asking for opinions about Operation Matador - the current battle on the Syrian border. MilBloggers are already on the job.
Chester of Adventures of Chester has a great analysis of what is probably happening - Marines with some engineer help from the Army are taking the fight to the enemy. But who is the enemy?
Iraqi Sunnis? Syrians? Foreign jihadists? The Hezbollah?
Chester is a former Marine Corps Officer. Here's some of his thoughts:
...Seems to reinforce the idea that the bad guys in this fight are trained military personnel, either from maybe Saddam's old forces, or from Syria, rather than Jihadists -- though its probably safe to assume a mix. Ten surrendering certainly doesn't sound like anyone eager to get to paradise like we've come to expect...
Bill Roggio of the Fourth Rail picks it up from there
...Operation Matador in the Western desert is the natural progression of operations designed to sweep through Iraq to engaging the insurgency region by region. The operations began late last summer in the Southern Shiites areas surrounding Najaf, then moved to Fallujah and the Sunni Triangle in the fall, and to Mosul in the North, the Triangle of Death south of Baghdad and along the Euphrates River west of Baghdad throughout the winter.
As the regions obtain a measure of Coalition presence and the Iraqi government takes greater responsibility for security, the next logical step is to cut off the flow of weapons, finances and fighters from outside the country...
Bill has a follow up post - The Matador's Sword.
Reports of Marine heroics are already coming from the battle. Thus far, three Marines have fallen. Some insurgents are surrendering and others are resorting to terrorist tactics - aiming for Marines rescuing their wounded. Over 100 insurgents have been killed.
Update 05-11-05: Bill Roggio and Chester have more info and posts complete with tactical maps.
