Sand Storm! - Al Asad, Iraq - 26 April 2005 - Pictures of the Week
These pictures of a sandstorm descending on Al Asad at about 60mph are via Marine First Sergeant John W.:

You can click on the thumbnails for larger versions of the pictures.
Update: I just received an email saying that the pictures were taken by Mr. Walter, a civilian contractor at Al Asad.

Brings back memories..... :o)
I remember the first sandstorm to hit us at Al Asad this time 2 years ago. But back then, the windows in the buildings weren't fixed yet.....

Well to all that look at these pictures and think wow...the pictures dont do it justice..I was in this particular sandstorm...it was awsome. At times they measured the winds at 145 MPH...experience of a lifetime being here and this made it just that much more unforgetable...Semper Fi

Posted by: steve | March 07, 2006 at 11:21 AM
I was in total shock -- not because of the amazing photos (indeed shades of
"Hidalgo"!) but because the photographer (allegedly a Mr. Walter, a civilian contractor at Al Asad) provided potential attackers with all the info they need to zero in on strategic targets on this base! He even named the location!
US ARMED FORCES BRASS: If you care about American lives, when are you going to learn to make all photography of U.S. military sites everywhere by anyone STRICTLY ILLEGAL??!!
