April 4th is Phil's Independence Day

"We will not go quietly into the night. We will not vanish, without a fight. We're going to live on. We're going to survive. Today, we celebrate our Independence Day!"

Almost a year and a half ago, I posted a poll in which you had the ability to determine the fate of my friend, Phil.  Basically, Phil was getting married and needed an intervention to prevent him from making the worst (or one of the top ten) mistake(s) of his life. 

His friends came to me and said I was the only one he would listen to.  I had to step up and save Phil.  So I asked readers for help and created the Save Phil Poll.

I followed through and intervened, and, over many, many drinks, Phil called the thing off.  It was a close call and the right thing to do.  The girl married someone else a year later.  I'll bet he's one miserable sob.  Phil, however, is still available, overly-paid, conservative, athletic and barely sober.

Today was the scheduled wedding date and is now more popularly known as "Filipe Cuervo Independence Day".  Somewhere in Georgetown, there is a 6'3" Valpo grad raising hell and yelling thanks to you all.

Here is the message today:

For all of you out there, I just want everyone today to have a toast for my Independence!!!

It is year to the day that I avoided the biggest mistake in my life…..you all would have been in California watching me sweat profusely in my tux as I eek out the words…."I do….now my life is miserable!!!!!" (Only because of her, I have nothing against the institution of marriage unless it breaks up a softball team)

I would like to take the time to thank Joe, @#$%, Slop and Matty for the intervention…..
