Thank You!
In Tim Chavez's column in the Tennessean, Tim recognizes this blog for helping to run down the info on the Heart of America email.
..."It took the help of the Web site blackfive.net to find the people behind the story and needed confirmation."...
While I spent some time tracking down the information for Tim, I need to thank the Marines that helped me verify the story behind the email that stormed through the internet over the holidays.
First, Lee Ballenger - US Marine in the Korean War (recon and tank units) and author of The Outpost War: US Marines in Korea - 1952 and The Final Crucible: US Marines in Korea - 1953 - took my call over the holidays. He was on the other line, didn't know me from Adam, and listened to my request for help. And he helped me.
Troy Watson got me pointed in the right direction. Troy is another Korean War Marine and webmaster/host of E-27 Marines (a web site devoted to those who served in Easy Company, Second Battalion, Seventh Marine Regiment of the First Marine Division).
USMC Col. (ret) Rik Pugh [aka Mad Russian] and USMC Col. (ret) Wayne Morris [aka Lobo] were the final links to Gunny Mark Francis.
And, as I said before Gentlemen, if you come through Chicago, please let me know. The first round or twenty will be on me.
