State Tax Refunds Can Help Our Troops

For those of you in certain states, you may have the option to donate your state tax refund to your state's military relief fund.

Here in Illinois (of all places), our state legislature and lieutenant governor pushed a measure through to help take care of our troops.

The Illinois Family Relief Fund - which distributed $2.7 million so far - provides grants for the lower paid members of the military (Active, Guard and Reserve).  Tax payers who donated their state tax refunds accounted for $200,000 of the fund last year (most comes from donations).  This year, the hope is to raise more support and to get other states to follow Illinois' lead.

WASHINGTON, March 9, 2005 – Illinois led the charge last year when it began letting taxpayers check a box on their state tax returns to donate their tax refunds to families of deployed guardsmen and reservists. <...>

To help promote the program and encourage other states to join in, Illinois established its Operation Home Front website, which tracks efforts under way around the country. A link from the site spells out exactly what states need to do to set up their own programs.

“We’ve got the blueprint,” Schuller said. “Now all they have to do is follow it.”

States with Military Family Relief Fund programs are California, Delaware, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont and Wyoming.

In addition, 21 states have introduced legislation to create programs: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania and West Virginia...

If you live in Illinois, consider checking line 28, box "h" for the Illinois Military Relief Fund. 

If you live in one of the states that also has a program, check out how to donate your refund.  If you live in a state not listed above, you may want to send requests to your state reps and governor to get a Military Relief Fund started (and supported, in part, by state tax refunds).
