Generations of Valor
Patrick P. sends this photo - probably one of the most powerful images that I've ever seen - which he found at AirWarriors via the Marine Corps League (Baltimore):
Pearl Harbor survivor Houston James of Dallas embraces Marine Staff Sgt. Mark Graunke Jr. during a Veterans Day commemoration in Dallas. Graunke lost a hand, a leg and and eye when he defused a bomb in Iraq last year. (AP Photo)

Amazing photo, B-5. The raw emotion of two men who have given so much for their country is so very apparent and moving. It makes me want to reach out to them and join in a group hug!

Pictures don't usually move me to tears, but that one nearly did when I first encountered it on Veteran's Day. It STILL does. It's worth far more than "a thousand words."

I am the proud mother of Marine Ssgt. Mark Graunke. I appreciate your kind thoughts and prayers. Mark comes from a family of military people that have served their country including his Grandmother who was a WAVE (deceased) and his Grandfather who was in the Army as a Medic, (also deceased). I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. James right after the picture was taken. This type of emotion is so real you can feel it in your bones. Thank you all again for your support of the service men and woman past, present and future. Let's not forget there is still a war going on..............with deepest thanks--Maggie

Truly an inspiration and amazing example of our young Americans of today and of years gone by.
--- Ssgt Graunke you are a hero. God Bless you and your family for all you have given to our country.
--- God bless WWII veteran Houston James of Dallas for your service at Pearl Harbor.
--- Maggie/notonbenasher @indiatimes.co, you have raised an incredible son, God bless you as a parent!
God bless all the vets from WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, and War on Terror (and their families who sacrificed so much!). Without the brave men and women of the armed forces, we wouldn't be the great country that we are. No wonder everyone is trying to immigrate to the USA. God Bless America!

I have never seen a picture with more power in my entire life. I saw a print out of it and immediately jumped online to find it. When I first saw it it took my breath away. I was in the Marines for 5 years and got out regrettably about 18 months ago but seen the error in my ways and am going back in on active duty this week for another tour. I can assure, while I'm in Iraq, this picture will be in my left breast pocket on my cammy blouse.....

Mark Graunke Jr., I have never met you before...but my heart truly goes out to you. I was in the Army, active duty for 3 yrs and I look at this photo of you with tears...thank you brother. You really are my hero. Stay strong. If you ever need support, a person to talk to or a shoulder to cry on, I am here for you.
Thank you.

What an amazing picture! I am so proud to say that I am an American and have brave men and women like Staff Sgt. Graunke defending me, my country and my freedom. I thank him for his very personal sacrifice. Without our brave soldiers we would not be able to enjoy the freedoms we all take for granted, charish and enjoy. Thank you for fighting for our freedom and the freedom of others.

I second everything others have already posted here. I'm a Canadian who's been living in the US for 7 years, the past 4 in NYC. Despite what the liberal media would have you believe, please believe that there are many foreigners who do understand and fully appreciate what the US military gives to the world. And while there is always room for thoughtful, intelligent disagreement over specific policies, there is in my mind no room for disagreement with respect to the selflessness of men like Staff Sgt. Graunke. My deepest respects.

I happened to see this picture on another site, and was so taken aback. Are there any words to describe the respect, the gratitude, the greatfulness that we as Americans have for our military personnel. This snapshot is but one heart felt instant in time, of two generations that have given of themselves. However, how many acts of bravery and valor go unnoticed, except to those immediately involved? I give you my whole hearted gratitude. Thank you.
